Question:
Why can't post ops take pepto?

I've seen folks mention that we shouldn't be taking peptobismol. Does anyone know why? Thanks for any input. -Kim open RNY 7/17 -105    — KimBo36 (posted on May 3, 2002)

I believe it is because it has aspirin in it. We can't have anything that has aspirin in it because of the possiblity of making our pouch bleed.

Well, that's the first time I've heard that. Pepto Bismol was actually recommended to me by my surgeon. I was having a lot of uncontrollable and foul smelling gas and he said that another patient had success using it. I've been using it a couple times a week since and have had no problems. Just like everything, the post op instructions vary widely from surgeon to surgeon. I've found my surgeon's instructions extremely easy to live with. I love it!! Shelley

I am having the Mini-Gastric Bypass with Dr Rutledge and we are told to take Pepto Bismol after surgery up to 4months.
