Hi Nilsa, I received a personal email from Shawn Garber asking me to come
for a consult, that he thought he could really help me, which I thought was
really nice of him--to take time out like that. I could not see him
because it was too far for me to travel to Great Neck. However, I could
recommend my own surgeon to you, I just met with him 4/16 and feel very
confident in him, he has a great disposition, and large knowledge base, his
name is Louis Flancbaum and he is based at St Luke's-Roosevelt in
Manhattan. He has a profile on this site for his info, but if you would
like more info feel free to email me, and myself or my wife will get right
back to you. Good luck and take care. -Jeff [email protected]

I have had one consultation with Dr. Dominick Gadaleta two weeks ago. He
came recommended from someone I have been corresponding with whom he
performed an open RNY gastric bypass on December 2001. She told me he was
very caring but also a straight shooter. Since I had an idea of what he
was like before I met him, I wasn't as "put off" as I might have
been. However, my husband thought he was smug. He didn't try to talk me
into any type of surgery but explained my options and the benefits of each
type over the other. I called other patients of his who have had surgery
by him, some had good post-op experiences and some had problems requiring
second surgeries. However, they all said they would do it again in a
heartbeat and would use him as their surgeon! I have decided to go with
Dr. Gadaleta and have already had my Psych.consult, I am having my
echo/stress test tomorrow, have seen the gastroenterologist and am waiting
for a test date and have my appointment with the nutritionist set for early
May. His bariatric coordinator, Yvonne, told me to call next week to
discuss a surgery date. I had heard that Dr. Garber didn't seem to be the
right doctor for this type of surgery. Just a feeling someone had when
they went for a consult. It's really hard when you have to rely on others
for their opinion since we all may be looking for something different in a
surgeon as far as personality and bedside manner. I know we all want
competent, experienced and caring surgeons. I wish you luck in making your
choice. I know I feel good about mine. - Kathleen

My Doctor is in New York, on Long Island. His name is Dr. Cooperstone and
he is wonderful. He had never lost a patient and has only had one patient
in his career that had a leak. He's very straight foward and honest. I
whole-heartedly recommend him. He is through Northshore Hospital in Syosset
which is a great hospital.

I felt Dr. Garber wasn't right for me and you can read my profile for
details. Good for you for wanting to check out several docs at this stage.
I was stupid and put all my eggs in one basket and wasted a lot of time
with him. After I parted ways with Garber, I found Dr. I. Michael Leitman
at Lennox Hill, by way of a recommendation. I couldn't be happier with my
choice. I had surgery February 14, 2002 and have always felt that I am in
the hands of a sensitive, competent, experienced, and down-to-earth
surgeon. Use the find-a-doc page here, it should be of help. Good luck!

Hi...I had met with Dr. Garber a couple of months ago. While I had an
appointment for a consult with him, I also made another one with another
surgeon, Dr. Thomas Cerabona (Valhalla, NY) because I wanted to be able to
make a decision based on the surgeon. I also knew someone that has used
Dr. Cerabona, so he came highly recommended. I met w/Dr. Garber first and
then Dr. Cerabona. As soon as I started talking to Dr. Cerabona, I knew
that he was the one that I wanted to do my surgery. He is so easy to talk
to, very honest, answers all questions, doesn't make you feel like you are
rushed at all. While Dr. Garber basically was the same way, there was just
something about his attitude that I wasn't crazy about. I have also heard
that Dr. M. Leitman of New York City is a very good surgeon and did have an
appt to meet with him, but cancelled it after meeting w/Dr. Cerabona (also,
I didn't really want to be in a hospital in NYC)...so now I am closer to
home. Hope all goes well. Take care.

I started off with Dr. Garber, but didn't like the wait or the fact that he
hands you a doctor list and sends you on your way to see them all. I also
know someone who had a very bad set of complications with Dr. Gadaleta. My
surgeon was also Dr. Cooperstone. He is wonderful.
