Question:
I cant seem to avoid carbs!
I am 3 weeks post op and feeling really awful.I want this to work but I cant seem to stay away from carbs enough.I havent had any candy, my big downfall before, but still eat custard, fruit, diluted juice and things like that. The bizzare thing is that they seem to really be easier on my stomach than a lot of other things.I'm feeling really discouraged about myself and unsure if I'll be able to do this.I've lost 23 lbs so far and I keep thinking if I was doing things right it would be a lot more... — [Anonymous] (posted on February 5, 2002)

Unfortunately, the more sugars you eat, the more you will want. Do more
healthy thinks make you feel pukey? How many g of protein supps are you
getting in? The more protein (with no milk, no sugars, even natural) you
take in, the more control over sugar cravings you will have. Honest. I
could NEVER have held goal wt this long without that help.

Resist! Carbs are not our friends! Are you eating enough of
the right foods? Try to fill up on your proteins and you won't
crave carbs so much. If all else fails, try sugar free pudding.
The vanilla flavor might satisfy your custard cravings. You really
shouldn't be drinking fruit juice..even diluted...way too much sugar.
The think with carbs...is the more you eat....the more you crave. It
becomes a viscious cysle. If I were in your position, I'd go "cold
turkey" and eliminate all simple carbs. It's hard...but it only
takes
a week or two to detox yourself and then it's clear sailing. I'm 4 years
post op and after gaining some weight, that's what I had to do. Now I
only
eat protein, fruits, veggies, and whole grain cereal/crackers. I don't
crave
carbs anymore and I losing weight again.

One of the other answers is one that is making me crazy. Fruits, veggies
and whole grains ARE carbs. I think most people, when they talk about
carbs, really mean starches. The fact is our bodies need protein, carbs
and fat (yes, I said fat) to function properly. That doesn't mean a lot of
fat, it doesn't mean lots of carbs, but you do need all three. Just keep
your carbs to the whole grain, fruit and vegetable categories and you'll be
fine.

Ok, now that I have the 'carb' thing off my chest. I think you're doing
fine at 3 weeks post op. 23 pounds in 3 weeks is a little over a pound a
day! Your 'innards' may not be completely healed yet. Many docs appear to
have their patients still on clear liquids at 3 weeks and many more, on
full liquids or pureed foods at that point. If what you're eating now is
still all you can eat 3 weeks from now, that's another thing altogether.
What does your doctor recommend at this point after surgery? I know that
they are all different, but IMHO, it's best to do what yours tells you to
do.
