Question:
Peanut butter as source of protien?

Is peanut butter a good source of protien or not?I dont understand why it would be since most of the calories come from fat.The same goes for cheese. Why can we eat these things but must drink skim milk and watch fat in other products?    — [Anonymous] (posted on February 5, 2002)

My doctor thinks it is an excellent source of protein. I eat half a banana with a tablespoon of PB on it every night before bed. In fact, I was told to not use LF or FF peanut butter because of the sugar content. I can't answer why it *IS* ok, just that I'm allowed to have it, with the doc's blessing. I would imagine it has to do with the small amount we eat. I know preop, the thought of only 1 tablespoon of PB would have made me laugh hysterically.

My doctor told me to watch calories in drinks, such as milk, soda pop, etc. But he said--as far as solid food goes--we can't eat enough of it until about 6 months post-op to be of any major concern. Hope the info. helps, and enjoy your peanut butter!

Peanut Butter is an excellent source of protein. We malabsorb fats, and eat such a small quantity that it isn't a concern. We need a certain amount daily anyway for our skin, hair and nails. And the prev. poster is correct in saying that they add sugar to low-fat and fat-free products to make up for the taste lost after removing the fat. Always buy regular dressings and mayo too! Enjoy your PB. Bon Apetite!!

My surgeon says he thinks that peanut butter has too much fat to be of nutritional value... there are better choices. Even with malabsorption of fats... it still has too much per portion to justify the little bit of protein. As for cheese, low fat or skim milk mozzarella such as Polly-O cheese sticks or Cabot Lite Vermont Cheddar are good choices as the fat is low enough to justify the benefits of the protein. We can eat anything we want... we just have to make the best choices.

My weight loss has been super, and I eat peanut butter. So I don't see a problem with it!
