Question:
So exactly what do they look for with the Psych test?
When I go to have my psych test done, what exactly are they looking for? I know I'm supposed to be honest, but I also don't want to lose the opportunity to have the surgery. Am I supposed to have my life "in order," or am I supposed to be a "wreck?" — Robby E. (posted on January 14, 2002)

You are supposed to be yourself. Don't worry about it so much!! The MMPI
can tell if you are lying, so just be open, honest and forthright about
everything. You will be fine!! It isn't as big a deal as you feel it is
right now!! Trust me!! I've been there!!!

All they really look for is to see if your in reality with the sugery and
life changes. Your doing this for you health. I think you will do fine if
you act normal, its ok to be nervous. I think your afraid of regection,
don't worry all of us has a flaw. I have bi-polar and I'm very scared of
what they may think. Relax you'll and you'll be fine.

I too am Bipolar and I haven't gone to my Psych Eval yet, but my surgeon
has a preliminary psych test available on-line along with application for
surgery. Some of my answers must have raised a red flag because I received
an e-mail requiring approval from a Mental Health Provider. I see a
therapist on a regular basis, so I went to her and asked her to help me get
approved for this surgery. I think what they look for is: Are your goals
realistic and are you prepared to make serious and long range life changes.
I personally, would not make it a vanity issue--and focus primarily on how
the quality of your life will be improved by better health. For other
manic-depressives out there--often our behavior is seen as impulsive and
irrational, so be careful in approaching your MHP. I know mine is putting
me through the ringer, thinking this is just another one of my passing
phases, here today, gone tomorrow. Good Luck.
