Question:
Can we eat cheese as protien or is it too high in fat?

What kinds of cheeses are best?I have surgery tommorow and am planning ahead.I was under the impression that it would cause dumping.Does this mean Pizza is still in my future?    — Stephanie H. (posted on January 13, 2002)

Cheese is a great source of protein!!!!!!!! Just try and watch the higher fat ones, use those sparingly. Mozarella is lighter than say colby or cheddar, and I buy the light string cheese. It only has 3 grams of fat, and I think 5 grams of protein. As for pizza. I enjoy is every so often!!!!! If fact pre surgery I hated pizza, and so far that is the only thing that I have "craved" lol. Good luck on your surgery. May god be with you

I have heard tell that the harder the cheese, the lower the fat. I love swiss and white cheddar, sprinkled parmesan and romano, feta and cottage. Cream cheese just balls up in my tummy and makes me feel sick, so I avoid it. But the others I enjoy plain, melted on veggies and definitely in scrambled eggs. Cheese is GREAT, except for the high sodium content.

Cheese is a super source for protein and great for a quick snack. Cream cheese does not have much protein in it. And about the fat content, I wouldn't worry too much about that, we malabsorb fat, and it is necessary for our health.

I had a lot of nausea my first 3 months post op , so I ate mostly cheese as my source of protein it didn't bother me ( go figure). I am 20mo. post now , and I don't believe it ever interfeared with my weight loss. 278-138!!

I have been getting Low fat shredded kraft Chedder to add to my high protien meals like Chili. Also over beans. I add a little to pureed tuna with low fat mayo. Canned White meat chicken(crumbled) I add bacon bits Low Fat mayo, cheddar Cheese LF shredded, and also to give it a flavor boost some fresh crumbled bleu Cheese! Eat it on low fat crackers. YUM! Cheese is your friend, and a great snack in a pinch!

I've used shredded cheddar in chili and with refried beans to add protein and a bit of necessary fat to my diet, although I do buy the lowfat variety. I also purchased a big package of individual string cheese for a quick snack. My kids LOVE the string cheese so how much of it I'll actually get is yet to be seen lol. God bless and best of luck tomorrow!!

On my post op diet sheet the only cheese that is listed is cottage, parmesan and any hard or semi soft cheese that is under 55 cals per servicing. I choose cottage due to high protein, low carbs and low fat...... I did buy a package of reduced fat... but not sure how I am going to use it... Best of luck to you.....
