Question:
Is 1000 calories too much for 2 months post op?
I seem to get hungry between meals and can nibble on snacks. I added up my daily calories last night and came up with 1000 give or take a few. I am only 9 weeks postop...I couldn't hardly eat anything until 2 weeks ago...due to a lot of intestinal pain...now that is gone I eat a 4-5oz meal without much incident. — KimBo36 (posted on September 24, 2001)

According to my nurtionist, yes, that is too many calories this early on.
But remember too, all calories are not created equal! Try to nibble on
healthy, low calorie/high protien snacks...you'll be more successful in the
long run. Good luck!

I'm not sure if it's too much, but I've been eating about that many
calories a day since about two months post. My surgeon and nutritionist
seem to think that my diet is fine. I've lost 90 pounds in 9 months, so I
don't really think it is too bad. Sure, you may lose more rapidly on fewer
calories, but it's about establishing good eating habits. Besides, my
surgeon says that you will definitely still lose on a 1000 cal/day diet.
Most reducing diets that doctors prescribe are about 1200 calories. You
cannot maintain a high body weight with only 1000 calories/day. It takes
many more calories to sustain a morbidly obese weight. Also, I noticed that
if I get fewer than about 800 cal/day, I will plateau for a long period.
Soon as I go back to 900-1100 calories per day, it usually breaks. You may
want to talk to your surgeon and/or nutritionist. My surgeon seems to be
quite liberal when it comes to the amount of food we can/should eat.

When I saw the nutritionist, she said anything under 1000 calories a day is
not enough for your body to fuel itself. She said stick to 1000 to 1200
and one should still loose weight. Of course, your choices of foods are
very important at this point. I get hungry too, between meals, but I try
to snack on string cheese, yogurt, small snack crackers, applesauce. Or
drink tons of water or other low cal beverages. I am 4 1/2 months post op.
