Question:
When I ate today it stayed
I'm 20 days post op and I'm still supposed to be on pureed foods however I just chew the heck out of everything and it's working fine. Today I ate just a small amount of chicken bbq with potato salad and beans. Most of it I brought back home. After waiting around four hours after eating I decided to try alittle of the potato salad. I got around six or seven small bites when something felt really weird in my chest. The food was'nt going down! I ran to the bathroom just in time. I've never had this happen before. Surely the other food I ate would have long been digested (or passed through). Is this something that might be happening often? Does it go away with time? Thanks. — Danmark (posted on May 28, 2001)

What you experienced is "dumping." It has happens to me if I eat
something too fast or didn't chew it to mush or I eat too much. Same thing
happens if you gulp liquid. You may not throw up, but you will get the
chest pains until the whatever you ate/drank goes down.

I hate to disagree with Betty but I don't think that was dumping. Sometimes
food just gets stuck. You may have eaten more than you thought or you
didn't chew well enough or you ate too fast. You'll learn how to adjust. It
is scary when it first happens but I've gotten used to it and just try to
be more careful.
