Question:
I am 9 weeks post-opt and have never had any problems with vomiting until now.
I have had absolutely no problems with any kind of food. I have started to have episodes of pain and vomiting. I did call my doctor and he said it isn't a closing because I would not be able to eat or drink. These episodes may happen say on Mon. I could hardly get water down and then turn around on Tues. and eat anything I want. I have watched my eating time 30-45 minutes. I chew extra well and it can still happen. Someone said it may be spasm's and thats why it is so sparatic. Any ideas? — kyad7 (posted on December 5, 2000)

I had much the same experience. I did not vomit at all for the first month
or two, but then I went thru a period of quite a lot of vomiting. It was
much like you describe in that some days it seemed I could eat almost
anything without problems, other days no matter what I ate, it would come
back up. I, too, called my Dr who said wait & see if it continues &
then said, since it wasn't happening all the time, it wasn't a stricture
closing off. This worst period of vomiting eased off after a week or so,
but even now, almost eight months post op, I still experience the same
thing, only farther apart. I still have some days when I just can't seem to
eat very much without it hurting or coming back up. Fortunately, these days
are pretty rare now, but I still vomit maybe once every ten days or so. If
that sounds like a big deal, it's really not (at least to me). I can now
tell shortly after eating if it's gonna need to come back up & if so I
just go vomit it up (takes about 20 seconds) & am done with it.
Sometimes I can try eating again in 15 or 20 minutes, sometimes not. When I
have those "bad food days" I just rely on my protein drinks
&/or protein bars. Most of the time I can eat almost anything I want,
just in small amounts, of course. I guess I have adjusted to this routine
& I'm really quite satisfied with it. So I don't eat normally, when did
I ever eat normally? Eating up to 350# isn't normal eating, either. I do
know several people who never vomit & maybe it'll turn out that way for
you, too. But if not, let me say that I am so very happy with my results
that I really don't care if I puke from time to time. It doesn't hurt at
all now. By the way, I have lost 140 pounds in these not quite 8 months, I
can now jog/walk on the treadmill for two miles & then exercise for an
hour. I feel so great after working out (I just finished). I feel so
strong, healthy, & energized. I am in size 16-18 now & have left
the plus sizes forever! I had forgotten it was possible to feel so great
& pain free. I feel like I've lost about 20 years with my 140#. I just
wanted to let you know that even if you vomit occasionally, you can still
be very successful. I still think it's important to keep your Dr informed
of what's going on to be sure there isn't some problem. But, for me, if
occasional vomiting is the price I have to pay, I say it's a GREAT deal!
