Question:
I am planning a trip to Hawaii....need advice!
I am planning on having a an open revision from VBG to RNY in late May or early June. My family is planning a trip to Hawaii in early August. Is 2 months enough time to recover before going on a trip like this? Thank you for your responses. — LaKeAffy (posted on March 11, 2005)

It "might" be enough time to physically feel better however I do
not think that you would enjoy yourself at all since you will still not be
eating normally. If you go over there and have complications will there be
a treatment facility capable of handling you and will they take your
insurence? There are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself before
embarking on a trip like that. Just my two cents. I am almost 2 months out
and I tried to travel back home to MI and I only got about 100 miles into
the trip before I turned around and came home b/c I felt like such crap!
And I am eating a normal diet. However I ate something "on the
road" that made me ill and I was so whiped I could not picture myself
driving the rest of the way there.

Dear LaKeitha,
I am no doctor, so my reply would be to ask the doctor who is going to
perform your surgery. I knew I was going on a cruise, so I had my surgery
after the cruise. I was afraid if there were any issues that came up after
my surgery, it would be best to be close to home and my doctor. If your
procedure is to be "open", I would imagine the recovery rate to
be much slower than the laparoscipy; any surgery can take the tar out of
you, and this surgery is considered major surgery. To play it safe I'd
wait to get the surgery after the trip. Good luck whatever you decide,

Personally, I would have done fine on a trip at 2 months out. In fact, I
did take a one week trip at 7 weeks out for one week to visit my cousin. I
just had to plan what I had to eat and made it fun. I was not open so this
could have made it easier. I would say that it depends on you personally.
If it were me, I'd go for it, but that's my personality!
