Question:
Will surgery date have to be changed due to my monthly?

If it is suppose to be here by the surgery date, will my surgery have to be rescheduled or will they proceed? — T. Alford (posted on February 27, 2004)

I had this same question just before my surgery. I lucked out and my period was over just the day before but anyway I found many answers in a library search. Most women commented that no made no difference. My advise would be to take your own pads/tampons with you since usually the hospital have the OB type and you might not be comfortable.

I have had more than 1 surgery during my period, although not my RNY. They are used to dealing with it. As the other poster said, definitely bring your own pads. Hospital pads are gross. I would suggest the Always Overnights. I know they are large, but definitely comfortable when sitting in bed in the hospital. The first post-op day, ask the nurse or aid to help you change if necessary. They usually are quite helpful and understanding. Good luck!

In alot of cases, this surgery will bring on your period while you are in the hospital...So they are very used to dealing with this issue.

In a word - no. A woman having her period is a very human thing and the hospital and medical staff are used to this. You just need to tell them that you are bleeding and they will have the correct supplies there for you. I had my period when I had my gall bladder out and the nurses just rolled with it. Having a period is nothing out of the ordinary for them.

Definitely not. I was horrified to find out the morning of my surgery that "my litte friend" showed up. I mentioned this to the charge nurse upon my arrival to the hospital and was told that this happens quite often. Like the previous poster said, the shock of surgery to your system sometimes brings about your period. Barring any abnormally heavy flow that could effect your iron level, you should be fine. Good Luck! Sabrina

there should be no reason for them to postpone surgery, because of your period. I actually started mine the day of surgery. Other then the mess I made, it was fine. Good Luck

It's common for having surgery to cause women to start anyway. Mine started the day before surgery, and everything I read here, just said to tell the nurse as they prep you for surgery. They gave me a pad and told me to wedge it between my legs (no undies during surgery!)

One thing I took with me to the hospital which I found really helpful to have was some Cottenelle wipes (or any of the other bathroom wipes would work just as well) Since I wasn't getting around that much that first day, it was nice to be able to at least be able to reach down and clean myself off, without having to go to the bathroom to wash. (I know, probably too much information, but we need to know stuff like this!)

No. I got my the day of surgery. It is very common for women to get their periods either after surgery. Bring a old pair of underwear and cut it down the center (need to make room for the drainage tube). Buy extra long pads and wipes to clean your self. I'm so glad I did. Good Luck with your surgery. I will be 11 months post-op and have lost 171 lbs. and still counting. Today I'm 155 lbs and playing tennis which I haven't done in 20 years. I wear a size 16 (from a 5x).
