Question:
How do I prevent my 4th stricture in 12 weeks out?

HELP!! I've had 3 strictures in 6 weeks. Besides eating more solid food, how can I help prevent my fourth stricture in so few weeks? I feel sure all these dialatios will blow out my stoma and pouch. Please help with ANY DR. recommended ways to prevent strictures. I'm desperate and panicked for ways on prevention of strictures. Thank you in advance. I could be wrong (happens haha), but it's my understanding that we have NO control over strictures, SLD, fistulas, obstructions, etc. They just happen to some people and others are lucky and it doesn't. I'll offer up a prayer for you though :>) Good luck!!!

Hi Kathy. I am sorry you are having this problem. I do not have any personal experience with this complication. However, something you said made me want to share what my doctor's post op plan is and why. He insists on 6 weeks of liquids or soft foods. He feels that solid food bumping against the fresh stoma is what causes scar tissue to develop leading to strictures. I do know that there are many doctors who do not restrict the post op diet to just liquids and many patients are allowed solids right at the start. Does your doctor feel that more solid food will prevent strictures? I could see where there could be a belief that solid food may push against the stoma and keep it open? However, you may be developing scar tissue because of it. My doctor has very few complications post op, including strictures. Maybe you could ask your surgeon about this theory? I hope it gets better! Hi! I just had my fourth scope and dilation today.I'm 11 weeks out from surgery.A stricture can develop any where that there is a surgical connection. The first two times that I had strictures my g.i. doc thought it was because my pouch was still producing some acid. This can cause an irritation of the lining which in turn can cause scar tissue to grow, then overgrow causing a stricture. My doc put me on antacid medication hoping to stop the problem. However I have continued to get strictures. There is nothing you can do to prevent them.I was told that women get them more frequently than men do.A few years ago, surgeons started using the circular stapler to attach the pouch to the intestines instead of hand sewing it.This decreased the percentage of leaks but has increased the percentages of strictures. If you get a stricture it is common to have to be dilated 2 or even 3 times before it stays open.People rarely need to be dilated 4 times. But today was my fourth time and my g.i. doc said that if I develop another stricture he will have to consult with my surgeon to discuss a surgical option.
