Question:
When is it safe to ride an amusement park roller coaster?
Hi, I haven't rode on a roller-coaster since I was younger, and a size 12 and ever since I got bigger, I never attempted to get on a roller coaster again in fear that I might not fit on one. :( Anyhoo, I want to go out this summer to amusement parks and ride roller coasters but I don't know at what size is it safe? I'm about a size 14/16 bottom and misses size large tops now. At about what size were you when you were able to fit on a ride? Thanks a lot! This will help save me from any embarrassment!! hehehe thanks! — Iris B. (posted on March 28, 2003)

If you are a size 14/16, you will be totally fine. I haven't been to a
roller coaster ride in forever, but I plan on going when I am under 300
pds...which is a weight limit on many rides.

You will be just fine at a 14/16. I went to an 2 different amusement parks
last summer with my children and it was before surgery, I was a size 22 and
the only thing I couldn't fit on is was the swings. You will be fine
Enjoy!!!

In December, I was about 296 pounds and had a 54 waist (down from my pre-op
weight of 427 pounds and a 64 or higher waist (I wore sweats for the most
part) and had no problems getting on the Splash Mountain and Space Mountain
rides...JR (open RNY 07/17 -157 pounds)

True story that happened at Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA shortly after
Cyclone opened. Young girl in her twenties weighing almost 400 pounds, fit
in the ride with the bar able to close. On the first dip, her weight broke
the bar and she flew out and was killed instantly. Weight restrictions are
there for a reason. If they say it is safe for you to ride, let's hope they
are right!

I just got back from Disneyworld a few weeks ago and I was able to fit on
all of the rides, and I was only about 6 weeks postop at the time (my
weight was about 260) so you should fit just fine, at least at Disneyworld
anyway. I think at size 14-16 you should be able to fit on just about any
ride. Have fun!

I had lap RNY 10/29/02 and went to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure
over Thanksgiving. I was in a size 16 and had no porblem fitting on any
ride. I live near Paramounts King's Island and I am looking forward to
getting on some of the rides this year. Last summer, my son's friend from
Germany and I went up and she wanted to ride 'Drop Zone". I wasn't
sure I would fit. Talk about being mortified - the ride attendant had to
help push to restraint down to swish all my fat in! (The ride was still
pretty awesome, anyhow!) You will be fine! Have fun!

Before I had the surgery, I was a size 22, and had no problem fitting in a
roller coaster. If you're a 14/16, I wouldn't be concerned about not
fitting in the seats. I think you'll be fine!
