Question:
How do I get rid of this double-chin?

Hi guys, I've lost 53 lbs and my face has really thinned out. However, I still have the unsightly double-chin that doesn't seem to be disappearing. Does anyone have any good exercises they know of to get rid of it? Also, how about that machine thing they have on the infomercials that uses electricity to contract the facial muscles? Do you guys think that would work? Please let me know! Thanks :)    — Iris B. (posted on December 30, 2002)

Yelp, right there with you. I have a turkey neck and it is really bugging me. My sister has commented on it and so has a friend. I'm hoping that my skin will catch up with me. At least my chin if nothing else. I can't cover that with clothes. So I'm open for any suggestions.

Hello! When I was in cosmetology school about ten years ago, one of my teachers who was short and weighed in around 400lbs. DID NOT, I repeat DID NOT have any extra chins. And, we young gals noticed it,(you know young folks will say/ask anything!)and asked her, all amazed, why don't you have any double chins. She demostrated this exercise: take the back of your hand and slap it under your chin, everyday. Well mind you 12 years later I came across an book called "SECOND YOUTH", written by an older/ex model whose almost 70 years old and look around 40 y/o -- In this book she has EVERYTHING that you need know about saying or looking younger from: vitamins, to minerals, face/body exercises, to anti-aging creams(what to look for)etc. I mean this book really educates you. I am 30 years old, and I want to see how young I an going look when I get 60 y/o if I start now and educate myself well. BACK TO ANSWERING THE QUESTION -- In this book she(the ex model) said the SAME THING -- lift your chin up, pointing it towards the ceiling, and take the back of your hand slap under your chin. I stopped smoking this summer -- I just stopped, with no helpings,(yeah me! -- why did I not just stopped with food?? -- oh yeah, food taste sooo goooddddd!) I get it from my mama, she did the same thing, just stopped smoking. Anyway, after the smoking stopped, my eldest son just started asking me why do I look so young not young but so young. I thought the boy was trying get something from me at first. Then, weeks and months later he still ask that same question, him and my other son. And, whenever I refer to myself as old or getting old, they quickly say, you don't look old. I be gladd when I don't feel old anymore. Hoped, I was any help. Anybody, want more info, email me -- [email protected] GOOD LUCK!!!

I cannot tell you how to get rid of your double chin--if I could, I wouldn't have one myself... BUT... do not waste your money on an electric "muscle toner"... they are absolute nonsense! I am a therapist, and these machines are very similar to "e-stim", a therapy used to trigger muscle contractions. Yes, they will tighten the muscle, BUT ONLY FOR THE TIME THE STIMULATION IS APPLIED!!! These devices do not strenghthen or firm muscles in any lasting way, and can be dangerous if used incorrectly! Please look elsewhere for a solution!! (and if you find a good one... pass it on!!)

I asked this same question over a month ago here and started to worry that maybe my only hope was a lower face lift (I'm only 30 and didn't really want that). But I was worried enough to actually talk to my plastic surgeon about it! Without surgery though I've gotten some results thanks to the answers on here. Now mind you've I've lost more weight, some not a huge amount. But the biggest thing I did was start doing some exercises suggested here on the Q&A and I think its working. To me that double chin is finally shrinking up. The one I chose to do is this. I tip my head way back and diliberately say "a_e_i_o_u" all the vowel sounds. I do it 10 - 20 times and try to remember to do it at least once a day and really try for twice. There were some other suggestions too but this is just the easiest for me. Whenever I think to do it and nobody is watching I can do it. Trust me, my 9 year old has watched me a couple of times in the evening doing it and thinks I'm insane. But if it works, heck with the world! Other suggestions you can find in the library. Anyhow, I do think the vowel exercise is working. And hey, its a ton cheaper and less painful than plastic surgery.

I have a couple of suggestions to add. I learned these techniques from my dad who is a speech therapist and he teaches his patients these exercises to strengthen their muscles after accident or stroke. it tones the muscles in the neck and throat area as well. One is to make like you are about to say a very hard "K" sound, but right before you release the "K" sound, pay attention to where your tongue is pressing the roof of your mouth and hold it there for 5-10 seconds. you can do this as many times as you want, and it is very discreet. Another thing is to take some stockings and roll them into a very tight ball, about the size of a grapefruit, tuck it under your chin and use your jaw to squeeze it down. don't nod your head back and forth, just move your jaw, like opening your mouth very wide. i have been trying these for a few weeks now and already noticing a difference.
