Question:
What is

Is yellow stool a sign of a problem or does it mean the bypass is working well? Open RNY (Long Limb) May 8, 2001 LAP Gallbladder March 1, 2002    — Danmark (posted on May 31, 2002)

I also have yellowish stool. My doctor said it was because of the gallbladder removal not the Rny. I'm 3 months post-op open Rny with gallbladder removal. The gallbladder has something to do with the bile in your stomach so maybe there is more bile in your stool now because you have no gallbladder. Hope this helps.

Hi Daniel - I'm 5 months post-op and have had mostly yellow poop :-) from the begining. I hope you mean poop when you say "stool" :-) Anyway, I still have my gallbladder and so that's not the reason for the color in my case.

i had my gall bladder out 14 years ago, and just started having yellow (bright) stools after my surgery (open rny). i don't think it's the gall bladder.

Yellow stool (AKA poop) is normal for us'all. To give you a brief overview, the liver makes bile which is green. It is normally stored in the gall bladder (via a 'T' tube) and released as needed into the small intestine to help digest fats. Bile turns yellow as it ages. When the gall bladder is removed, the liver still makes bile on demand and it is now released into the small intestine. Because of the "Y" we by-passers, both RNY and DS have, the bile is released further along in the intestine than it is normally release and therefore spends less time being churned up with food, breaking down and therefore is eliminated in stool with the yellow color intact. Hope that helps. Personally, instead of focusing on color, I am fascinated by the shape and size of my poop...

Ok so BM's are a fascination to us post-op, and yellow BMs are perfectly normal now. Just don't get constipated. BTY the explaination that described the reason for the yellow BMs was excellent! Must have been a nurse. Diane N, RN
