Question:
How much Fat can you eat?
I was under the impression that the bypass makes it so you dcan't absorb very much fat. Yet some people say you need to keep your fats low, or at least under 10 percent. I don't get it. If we don't absorbe alot of fat then what is the worry? I'm really curious about this. Thanks. — Danmark (posted on April 23, 2002)

A lot of people (including myself) experience intestinal discomfort (gas,
upset stomach, loose stools) from too much fat. The biggest problem that
it gives me is an upset stomach. If I go much over 14 grams in one
sitting, I don't feel good.

So far, I have had no problem with any amount of fatty or greasy foods. I'm
a DS patient with a distal bypass, so most fats are malabsorbed.
Fortunately, ingesting them doesn't bother me with any GI troubles, and
they haven't hindered my weight loss either. What can I say? Being able to
essentially ignore fat grams is one of the major perks of the DS, in my
opinion. :)

I am as distal as one can be, and fats also don't bother me. They don't
make me fat, don't make me dump, don't give me diarrhea. Zero effect.
Being "fat free" has been trendy for years. It's hard for some
people to swtich from fat free to sugar free. Generally speaking, though,
FF is higher in sugar. RNY & BPD malabsorb fats/oils to varying
degrees. No one malabsorbs sugar.

Well eating fats (or deep fried) does'nt bother me in the least, but I'm
wondering if it's keeping me from losing weight. I don't think I eat high
fat, but I haven't worried about it ether.

I'm 2 years post open rny.. I can eat any amount of fats, don't really have
trouble with them at all, but I have found that greasy foods do not sound
or taste good now for the most part. I have never dumped on fats. I eat
quite a lot of butter, drink milk, sometimes have cream sauces like Alfredo
& occasionally use real cream in my coffee. But you can keep the greasy
fried chicken & french fries....yuk. I gained back about 5 pounds in my
second post op year, but recently had my TT & have now lost what I had
gained & a few more pounds. Maybe it's not a good idea to eat many fats
while you're still losing the weight, but when you're just maintaining, you
have more freedom.
