Question:
Can I suggest the Dr use Steri-Strips instead of staples?
I DONT THINK I CAN GO THROUGH STAPLING. I GUESSED STRIPS WOULD BE LESS TROUBLE IS THIS TRUE? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 22, 2001)

I had open surgery on 8-6-01 I too was scared of "stapling"
I asked my Dr. about other methods and he wasn't too receptive about
anything else but stapling. I have to tell you it was not worth worrying
about I had about 60 staples and had NO problems. It didn't hurt at all
either when they came out and my incision is healing beautifully. After
about the 4th day I didn't even use a bandage just let it air dry and I
took showers and could actually leave it open in the shower. So don't
worry whatever your Dr. decides you'll do fine.

If you are having the Open RNY, IT WILL NOT HOLD.
There is alot of stress on the staples and you don't want your insides to
come pouring out. ;) I'm a veterin of staples. They really aren't that
bad, unless you have them "to far South" which I have. ;) Honest,
they are no big deal. Your 4 inch (or whatever) incision will hurt you more
than the staples ever will. Don't sweat the little stuff like
s"taples". :)

Hi! I had no external stitches or staples for my open RNY on 6/27/01. I
think they used surgical glue, but I know they used steri strips and a
couple layers of betadine film. They removed one layer before I left the
hospital and the steri strips and other layer of film came off 2 weeks
later. I was able to shower and everything from day one, as long as I made
sure that my incision was absolutely dry--we used a blow dryer set on low
for that. Hope this helps!

The other posters are right. The staples really are not anything to worry
about. You're out when they are put in, and you can hardly feel anything
when they are taken out. Just a little pull. Steri-strips would not be
sufficient. I had my staples removed early, at probably 9 days I think.
They then put the steri-strips over all of my incision. Even after those 9
days of healing, part of my incision pulled apart and therefore leaked a
little and took longer to heal and left me with a wider scar in some areas.
Stick with the staples.

8/22/01 - Had my open on 7/24/01, Had no staples. My doctor did all his
stitching on the inside and used 4 outside stitches to finish. One at the
top, one in the middle and 2 at the bottom. He said he uses this method
because it creates a smaller, thinner scar when healed.- debi mumaw

I think it depends on your BMI,my doctor said the bigger the tummy the
harder to hold together,if you don't have a lot of weight to lose(meaning
about 100 lbs or less) it's very likely they will use sterstrips.

You cannot have JUST steri strips. You don't get to choose anyway -- the
surgeon decides how to stich or sew or staple you up. Don't sweat this
detail.

I haven't had my surgury yet..but I had a major knee surgery with 31
staples. When they were in they really didn't bother me (plus I had the
fun of showing them to my tough acting brother who nearly fainted)..when
they took them out they used a sort of clipper...I'd say the pain was about
a 5...but was over quickly. A couple spots bled a little.
