Question:
How much is 150cm in inches or feet?
I have read that 150cm is considered proximal. But how much is that in inches or feet? What does that mean? What is the difference between distal and proximal? — JoAnn S. (posted on July 15, 2001)

A proximal is just a word. Not all doctors even use the word so I don't
know where it came from either. Anyway I have spoken to several doctors at
the chat on several sites and they all say its about 50 cm to 150 cm
bypassed. So anyway its just a number right? The Distal which is even more
confusing is just a bigger number. It means there is a lot bypassed. I have
heard people call 200 cm a distal (However I have also heard that amount
called a medial) (The small intestine is about 22 feet long give or take
everyone is different) But the difference between a proximal and distal
operation lies in the amount of common intestinal length (don't get
confused by how much is bypassed or sectioned off- it's the common limb
that is the marker) So don't get to hung up on the words. Just know a
proximal is the shorter one and a distal is the longer one. The more
bypassed means the less you absorb, both calories but also nutrition. So
its a trade off. However the good news is you can supplement. My surgeon
Bypasses any where from 4 1/2 foot to 7 1/2 foot.. Depending on your
beginning weight..I was bypassed 7 foot (200cm)..so Technically I'm a
medial by some standards but most say proximal...again it's just a
number..
<p>
The cut off point between proximal and medial is arbitrary but a bypass of
less than 150cm is universally called proximal, a bypass of 150-250cm
medial and above 250cm distal.
