Question:
What is the difference between cutting the stomach and not
My girlfriends surgeon doesn't cut the stomach apart and mine did. Hers puts 4 lines of staples but leaves the stomach uncut. I was wondering what is the diffence....or is there any difference? Sharon — Sharon F. (posted on July 9, 2001)

Most of the time when people require revisions one of the main reasons for
this is staple line disruptions. Which means your staples come apart and
starts allowing you to use the old stomach which makes you be able to gain
the weight back. But when your surgeon transects the the stomach from the
other part generally you don't have that worry.

Most surgeons are switching to the divided procedure due to the high
incidence of staple line failure ....Failure because of the breakdown of
staple lines can reverse the procedure causing weight to be regained.
Cutting the pouch completely away from the rest of the stomach and
interposing small intestine (jejunum) between the cut edges minimizes the
chance of the stomach growing back together and reversing the bypass.
