Question:
After eating and feeling pretty good, 2 - 2 1/2 hours later it comes back up.
I am 5 weeks post op and had LAP RNY, I cannot eat much of anything except very small amounts and very soft foods. When I do try something new, sometimes it stays down for a while and maybe 2- 21/2 hours later it will come back up. I'm not an expert but this does not sound right to me. I don't drink before I eat and don't drink for a very long time after. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you, Annette — Annette S. (posted on June 23, 2001)

Annette, I am 4 weeks post op Lap RNY too. I can't eat more than about 1/5
to 1/4 cup of any type of food and I get full. I had my first vomiting
experience the other day because I ate more than I should have. It didn't
come up until a good hour later. I think it just takes awhile for the body
to decide that it can't digest it. Sounds like maybe you may be overeating
because you just can't believe that is all you can take in. So, if you are
eating about 1/4c. that probably is the limit for now. Hope this helps.

At 5 weeks post-op only being able to eat soft foods and small amounts
should be considered normal because that's about all I could eat at 5 weeks
and my surgeon said it was normal. I had Lap/Rny too. My surgeon said some
people take longer than others to be able to handle new foods. My new
stomach could not handle new foods until about 6-7 weeks post-op. I'm at 10
weeks now and am just being able to handle many more foods. BUT because
you're vomiting 2 hours after you eat, you need to make sure it's not a
sign of a problem so please check with your surgeon about this so you can
have peace of mind. Whenever I vomited from eating something that did not
yet agree with me, it happened within a very short time (5 to 15 minutes).
Don't forget, at this point in your recovery, liquids are the most
important thing - more important than food right now, so make sure you keep
drinking all the time. Don't let yourself get dehydrated. Also liquids will
promote healthy weight loss. I felt the same way as you are feeling at 5
weeks but trust me - it gets soooo much better. Be patient and you'll feel
back to normal (except thinner) very soon. It's all worth it in the long
run. Best of luck to you!

I'm 5 weeks post op also with the same problem and I'm really scared. I
haven't been able to talk to my doctor because he has three surgeries a day
for the entire week and was away at a conference last week. When I eat I
end up vomiting when I don't eat I feel fine. I just started taking
Prilosec. I had an upper GI Thursday which showed my stomach was mildly
irritated but everything else looked ok. Sometimes the pain is so bad
after eating it actually makes me cry and curl up in a ball. I hope we are
both better soon. I haven't eaten a meal and held it down since June 12th!
