I just asked my doctor that question yesterday,(I'm 3 weeks post op with 2
small openings in my incision)he said the chemicals in the pool would help
the incision heal...

Hi, I asked my surgeon the same question right before my surgery. I had
Open RNY and he said to wait 4-6 weeks to make sure incision was well
healed so my incision would not get infected. I had my surgery on 3-15-01
and I have lost 88 pounds! This surgery saved my life, and it is well worth
it! Good Luck to you!

I asked my Dr. the same thing and he said one week. As long as it was a
private pool and not a public one. He also said that a hot tub would be
great as well. I had no drainage tubes of any kind. Hope this helps.

I had an open bypass and was told on my one month follow-up that I could
swim in my own pool as long as I was fully healed with no drainage.
Soaking in the water softens that new scar tissue so you don't want to jump
in too early. I have enjoyed swimming this past week and its helping to
get some strength back, but am still so weak (surgery 5/9). Good Luck.

Make sure you don't swim for about 8 weeks. But, walking in the water
should be ok as long as it is your own pool (less contamination than a
public pool).
