Question:
Why am I heavier post-op?
I am pretty sure that this is water gain. So frustrating to be 17 pounds heavier post-op. What is the best way to rid myself of this water? — Debra L. (posted on May 29, 2001)

There are no dates on your profile, but assuming that you're less than a
week post-op, this is not uncommon. The trauma of the surgery and the IVs
both cause a considerable amount of rapid water gain. You should notice a
good loss in the first 2-3 weeks while your body rids itself of the water
retention. And although it sounds strange, drink as much water as you are
capable of. Drinking water helps the body get rid of water.

Drink water and the water-weight will go away soon. It sounds crazy, but
it is true and this happens to some people just post op. Also, make sure
you have taken your measurements! Then do this monthly on your surgery
date. You will be shocked!

Everything already said is exaclty right. Protein deficiency can cause
water weight gain, too, so when ready/able to eat protein, make sure you
get the recommended grams per day. Moving around helps, too. But it comes
off pretty quickly anyway, so don't sweat it.--Jesse
