I am 7 plus months post Lap proximal RNY. My taste buds went haywire after
surgery. Foods just didn't taste right. Most things tasted too sweet. I
used to love dark meat chicken. After surgery any chicken would make me
gag. I can tell you after a few months my taste buds did start to return
to normal, although today I still stick with only white meat chicken.

I also am 7 weeks out and cannot tolerate chicken either. It has made me
vomit (it got "stuck")the two times I tried. But then it is a
very dense kind of food for me right now, and even chewing it to death
didn't help yet. Might be we just need to wait a short while and it will
work better later ... I know eggs went that way for me. They made me soooo
ill at first and now they're just fine.

I had my surgery done in 1994 and did not eat chicken most of that time.
My husband was done in 1995 and never had any problems at all. Many of our
peers have had trouble with chicken, specifically. Some go to dark meat,
some only have it with gravy. I gave it up for 5-1/2 yrs. I had a revision
to my pouch in January and have had NO trouble with chicken since. That
makes NO sense at all. But it's just how it is. As Barb said, just try
again later. I had a set of foods that I tried every 3 months.

Hello. I am 5 weeks post-op. I suggest that you start out slow, try eating
Budding thin sliced Chicken(Deli section of your supermarket/luncheon
meat). If you can tolerate that then you have no problem with chicken. You
should eat really small bites of chicken and chew it until it is barely
nothing left. You can also buy Chicken in the can like Tuna. I hope this
help you.

I think the heaviness of the meat is what is causing you trouble. Give it
some time and you will be able to eat it again. I have the same problem
with steak. I try it about once a month and each time it gets better.

Try skinless chicken thighs. I cook them in a foil Reynolds cooking bag or
just make the bag myself with foil. The Reynolds brand has great recipes
with spice mixtures listed. I season the chicken and put in in the bag and
bake for 1 hour. It literally falls off the bone and goes down much easier
than white meat.

I cannot seem to tolerate chicken either. It is one of the only foods that
gets stuck and causes pain for me. I am 5 weeks PO. I tried cooking it
different ways and no go.

I am two years post-op and still can not eat chicken. I have tried the dark
meat, moist meat, gravied meat but nothing works and I love chicken (esp.
baked) The funny this is I can eat turkey with no problem, but the chicken
won't stay down. Go figure!

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but here is my theory. I
cannot eat chicken wings anymore. I used to love buffalo wings, but now I
cannot hold a single one down. I think it has to do with the skin. The
opening from your new stomach to your small intestine is really small, and
it is very difficult to shred the skin into smaller pieces like you can do
with the meat. I'm thinking the skin gets caught and that may be causing
your problem.

17wks post op and I can't eat chicken. Chicken had always been my main meat
and I find it hard not to be able to tolerate it now. But after trying it
about a dozen times and being sick every time I now can't even stand the
thought of it. I can eat hamburg and steak. Go figure!

This is a common problem I hear about throughout the support groups I
attend- Chicken is VERY difficult to process- it is a dry and tends not to
move well thrugh our pouches- Why bariatric surgeons recommend it early on
is beyond me. I am 8 months po and still have to be careful with chicken-
I could tolerate red meats and pork alot sooner than poultry- It has to be
very very moist- which sometimes means NO white meat!
Good Luck.

Chicken is a very hormonal meat. According to my surgeon, he said that all
too often WLS patient have a hard time metabolizing chicken. Turkey and
other birds don't have as much of the hormones found in chicken and that is
why other meats are more tolerated than chicken
