Question:
Why do I have nausea after drinking or eating?
Every time I take a sip of something to drink, especially water, I get sick to my stomach. I take small sips and that doesn't help. I tried warm water and that doesn't help. My mouth is usually dry and everything I eat taste terrible. What can I do. I followed my post-op diet but eating just the small amounts that I am supposed to eat I am still nauseated, and I feel like I am getting weaker everyday. Can someone help me Please! — [Anonymous] (posted on June 9, 2000)

Water makes you ill? Have you contacted your surgeon? As for your post-op
diet... hmmmm, you are *supposed* to eat small amounts? This is the first
time I have ever heard this. Everything I have heard, is you eat when you
are hungry and stop when you are full. I think that could be the
problem... you HAVE to eat. It is very normal that your tastebuds are
messed up. They will level out in a few weeks. How far post-op are you?
Who is your surgeon. Email me if you need me.

3 weeks post-op I had the same experience... I was barely eating when the
nausea started I did wait a day to call my surgeon and should NOT have...
he prescribed an anti nausea
suppository and it saved me... the nausea stopped immediately but by then I
was dehydrated which took another several days to recover again. Lesson
learned... call my surgeon immediately. They have the experience and
hopefully the answers. Best of luck to you.

My Ds surgeon advised me that water can cause gas and nausea post-op. I was
told to drink whatever I could, including weak fruit juice (fruit juice cut
50% with water). If you don't like it weak, and you weren't diabetic
pre-op, try it straight. How about tea, Crystal Light, etc? Whatever you
can keep down. I ate saltines when nothing else would do. Early post-op
from the DS, we're usually advised to eat whatever we can, and don't worry
about protein yet, because our bodies have stores that will last us a
while. For more advice, I'd suggest subscribing to the DS post-op
listgroup. It's purpose is to address post-op health concerns. To
subscribe, send a blank message to [email protected]. Best of
luck with the nausea. It WILL get better.
