Question:
Any tips for Joining a Health Club?
I've had lots of memberships at different clubs - haven't we all - another 'diet failure'. I found a club thats convenient, has hours and classes that suit my schedule and is affordable. What else should I look for? I'm also concerned that they are not part of a 'franchise' or large chain - if they go under, there goes my $$$. I could use some tips on this. Thanks. — Toni B. Toni, I have recently joined my local YMCA. It is a wonderful facility with
a LOT to offer: the rates are VERY reasonable, and there are no long term
contracts to sign. We have been very pleased with the flexibility of their
scheduling and they offer so many different activities. I must say,
everyone there has been very supportive. Look into it. It may be just what
you are looking for. Good Luck!

I agree. I have found the YMCA as well to be the best way to go. There is a
friendly staff as well as you do not get locked in to a long term contract.
They offer swimming/exercise classes/great weight equipment/and of course
the Thread Mill.

Hey Toni: The only suggestion I would add is to visit the club at the
time(s) of day you expect to work out to see how busy they are. Years ago
my husband and I joined one and when we went to workout, it was
packed.--Very discouraging. Our YMCA is also very good, BUT always very
busy unless you can go mid morning or mid afternoon. Good for you for
joining. Good luck.

Toni: I too joined the local YMCA and began working out at 6 weeks post op
from lap BPD/DS with the blessing of my surgeon. The Y was my only choice
because of its aquatic program. Exercising in water is excellent for the
morbidly obese. Now, minus 110, I still take two water classes, but also
take classes in stretching, toning, strength and aerobics. My personal
preference is to take classes where I am not left to my own devices or
choices. I find it's too easy for me to put off my workout, shorten it,
etc., if I'm not part of a class. Participating in classes keeps me
motivated and regular in my workouts.
