Question:
I have so much gas everyday. I'm 4 months postop. Had RYN distal. I feel great but
I have this one problem. What can I take to get rid of the pain from gas. I've tried Mylanta and Milk of Magnesia but sometimes it's just so painful. Sometimes I'm able to release it "when I'm alone" but other times it won't go away. Help from anybody appreciated. I've never tried Beano, does that help? — [Anonymous] (posted on February 10, 2000)

I can really relate! I had the Ds ( which is distal) on Dec 2nd. I have had
2 bouts with severe gas that left me in cold sweats! I use beano (
chewables) when I eat veges and anything with beans. It does work..I carry
some with me all the time. I also chew lactaid tabs when I eat dairy....if
I don't I suffer. What I have found that works the best for gas, once you
have it, is Phazyme gelltabs. ( Chewable Gas X is what I carry with
me..they come in good flavors...easier to take when water is not an option)
All of this really comes from what you are eating....keep a record of what
you eat and when you suffer from severe gas. I did that and have found a
few food items that I can't consume..esp when I am away from home! Food
high in fat also can do us in...keep the fat grams down and use Beano,
Lactaid and Gas X...they will be your new best friends! Good luck....I am
here if you want to share more !

I found GasX to be a wonder drug.

I'm 3.5 months post op RNY distal, and haven't experienced gas discomfort
at all.
However, I've been too chicken to eat any foods known to produce intestinal
rumblings,
that is, until the other night. My son offered to make supper, and
wouldn't you know ...
he made chili. I opened my brand new bottle of Beano, placed 4 or 5 drops
on my first
spoon of chili, and a couple more drops on the next spoonful, and guess
what? Not a
bubble or rumble the entire evening!
Due to my success with chili, I'm making split pea soup this weekend. Now
I won't be so
afraid of these foods, which made up a large part of my pre-op diet.

Have you been drinking milk or eating cottage cheese a lot? I used to eat
these things every day and I was full of gas all the time. Once I gave
these foods up, within a couple days, the gas went away. If you've tried
everything else, you might want to try giving up dairy foods for a week or
two and see if it helps.
