Question:
I don't think their is a solution to my problem but here goes.

I'm a distal RNY, 2 1/2 mo post op. I hate water. I didn't like it before and it's even worse now. I've tried cold water, tap water, water w/lemon, flavored water. I also tried tea and crystal light and can't drink them. I also get a slight cramping in my stomach after I take a sip of water that lasts about 30 or 40 seconds so that keeps me from drink water also. Any suggestions?    — hannah R. I hated H2o for a few months post-op, I'm now 9 months out. I drank juices and even tea to keep my fluid levels. H2o started tasting good again about 3 months ago. Keep plugging away I hope it will work for you.

Have you been scoped? Gastric Endoscopy? It's painless, but sounds like you should have a look done. I had trouble with water, but only when I was dealing with a marginal ulcer. It forms at the connection of the intestine into the pouch. It can make water taste metallic and feel like sandpaper going through. You can't diagnose it yourself, but the scope is done under a quick anesthetic, so you're out maybe 1/2 hour. Painless, and the treatment is medication. It's quite common for distals, but proximals can get 'em too. Much more easily fixed and more permanently than dehydration!

I am 2 months post op with open RNY gastric bypass. Often cold drinks cause a 10 sec. discomfort going down, but hot decaf tea with equal and hot W.W. cocca with skim milk seem to taste real good. I try to sip room temp. water as much as I can. I don't get enough liquids very hard to do.

Hannah, I, too have trouble drinking water. Makes my stomach ache and usually gives me heartburn, lukewarm, ice cold, tap cold, flavored, etc., doesn't matter. The only way I find to get at least some water is to fill my 32 oz. cup with ice at the start of the day and then drink my diet, caffine free diet Pepsi over it all day. By days end the ice is gone, with my stomach none to the wiser!! Hope this works. Good luck. My surgery was 5/6/99 and I've lost 70 pounds as of 10/1/99. Thinking of you, Linda
