Question:
If you have RNY distal I thought you couldn't eat fat.
I see some eat peanut butter, mayo, butter, etc. Is it you can eat a little, like a little sugar or is it just some can and some can't? — [Anonymous] (posted on September 12, 1999)

Are you sure those people had distals? I was revised to a distal three
weeks ago, and so far am on a very low fat (only what is incidental to the
food itself) no fat cottage cheese, no fat sliced cheese, the leanest ham,
turkey, chicken I can get, and no sugar, no added fat. I have had NONE of
the gas many distals discuss, I have had NONE of the diarrhea or any of the
"nasty" side effects I'd heard mentioned pre-op. I'm thrilled so
far! So if staying away from peanut butter, glasses of milk, and other
fats and sugars is what it takes ... I'm game!! :)

You thought we couldn't eat fat because...? It'll make us fat again, like
milk & sugar? Or because we don't tolerate them well? Or because they
make us "run"? I'm VERY distal and can eat fats. I don't run
naked through 'em, but I use mayo & butter, and eat fried things. Some
of us do get a more active bathroom life as a result, but not me. I've met
a few who have some discomfort, but they often end up with gall bladder
problems, so that may have been the issue. For me, I only absorb about 5%
of the fats I eat, so use water soluble vitamins and am pretty casual about
condiments. Eating "greasy food" doesn't appeal to my tongue any
more, though!

Some can and some can't as is the case with all food
tolerances. Fat can make you dump just like sugar does.

I had an open RNY distal with a 1cc micro pouch 17 mo ago. I have found it
very hard to toleratte some fats. I could have about 9 gms of fat/day . I
could tolerate olive or cannola oils in sm. quantities, real butter, I
can't Believe It's not butter Light or regular. and that was it. It seemed
like everything else made me throw up. I just got used to not eating very
much fats at all. I use alot of Pam. As time has gone by I can now eat very
little p'nut butter, WOW potato chips, and a pkg of low fat cheese crackers
with p'nut butter on it. I still keep a watch on my quantity of fats. I can
only tolerate 2 gms of sugar so I don't usually even try it- there's too
much out there made with nutrasweet, and I know that's okay for me.
Hope I answered your question.

I thought at first i was Lactose intollerant,Wrong I am FAT intollerant.
The 4 times I have thrown up since the LAP RNY
7weeks ago have all been due to fatty things like; 2%milk,
cream cheese(as a spread for crackers),and fish from Long John Silvers. I
no longer eat these things and skim milk is it for me.

As stated before, some people have different tollerance levels to fat.
Let's remember though, fat is NEEDED by your body to perform well on a
cellular level. (This is true for sugar too), but you can survive in great
health if you limit both. This idea of no fat isn't healthy.
