Question:
Why can't you drink little sips when you eat.
I'm just curious why you can't drink little sips during or right after a meal. What happens it you take a bite of something between meals, do you have to wait to drink? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 28, 1999)

You don't drink with meals because it can stop your wt loss. Or bring back
the fat. Sipping is drinking. It still flushes food through the pouch. If
you don't feel full, you don't stop eating. Flushing food through, even
slowly, can enable you to eat more. If you WANT to eat more, skip the
surgery. If you want to get the weight off, don't bypass the surgery by
cheating here 'n there. Drinking or sipping with meals; messing with milk
or sugar; constant grazing--any of those can undo your wt loss. I know
they all seem simple, but a little pinch here, a little pinch there can
cost you 40 or 50 lbs un-lost at the end. It just isn't worth it!

Well ... the primary issue is getting as much nutrition into your pouch as
you possibly can. If you drink fluids with your meal you won't get enough
food into you. It's a choice to be healthy and nurished as opposed to
keeping an old habit and drinking fluids with your meals and risk
stretching your pouch and not getting enough nutrition.

Hi, The main reason for no liquids during food time is, that we have
little tiny stomachs now, so if you fill up with liquids you don't have
enough room for your little amounts of food. And by waiting for 30 minutes
after you eat, it doesn't stretch the new stomach. And you don't vomit
from having to much in the stomach. I have done this a few times and now
have finally learned my lesson.:) I have found that if I only have 1 or 2
"small" bites of something I can still have small drinks after
and don't have to wait. But this can all depend on how far post op you are
too. Hope this helps. Cheri

I had an open RNY distal with a 1cc micro pouch 16 mo. ago. My surgeon did
not want me to eat and drink at the same time because he wanted me to fill
my pouch with food, which will hold your hunger longer instead of filling
it with food and drink. It was a hard thing for me to learn because I was a
take a bite and take a sip person. By eating like this -sm meals and 6-8
times a day we keep our insulin level which in turn speeds up our
metabolism, and helps us to lose weight. I know I have never felt better
and I can tell if I have done something wrong just by how my body reacts. I
have lost 159# so far and have 41 more to go. I will be happy to answer
anymore questions you have-feel free to write me back . Hope this helped.

LITTLE sips are Ok, but if you drink too much you will fill up the pouch
with fluid and you will not be able to eat or you will vomit.
