Question:
I am 6 weeks postop. My dietician said I need 50 grms per day of protein.
Is this enough protein? — [Anonymous] (posted on July 9, 1999)

goodness gracious NO. If you are any form of RNY you need about 150 gs
daily in 4 servings to obtain maximum absorption. If you take any less you
are running the risk of dry skin, fingernails and loosing your hair. The
supplements I use is DESIGNER PROTEIN. Not real tasty but highly
effective. Good Luck :~)

I would say that your dietitian probably knows you better than any of us
out here
and knows what your needs are. I would stick to what my dietitian told me
until I
checked with my physician. If you should run into problems they will ask
you if you
followed their instructions. I personally take spray vitamins since they
are so readily
absorbed. You might want to check out this web page and ask your
doctor and dietitian about it.

This is where I get my spray vitamins from and have had no
adverse effects but again... be sure to check with your doctor
on everything.
Best of luck to you.

My group facilitator says that with a proximal RNY, 50 grms of protein is
necessary each day. With a distal, at least double that amount, due to
greater malabsorption. I'd listen to my dietician if I were you.

The average body needs 60g per day. Depending on your particular type of
surgery, you may need more. I need 120-180g. Be sure not to take more than
about 30g at a time. No one can absorb it, except maybe a professional
athlete. Won't hurt, but is a waste of $$. There are several brands that
are tasty & well balanced for US. All are a better option than Instant
Breakfast & milk (antoher word for sugar). Beware the sports nutrition
section, though, as the weight GAINERS are sitting there beside the
innocent ones!
