Question:
2m10d post op and no solid foods?

I am 2months 10days post-op and still can not eat any type of meats either fresh or processed. BUT, I can eat all the chips, cookies, ice cream, sweet tea, oj, gatorade, crackers, peanut butter, pickles etc. that I want. I do not have any problems with sugar, no dumping syndrome, no loose bm's, no vomiting. I drink around 150oz. of water per day(I work outside) + 1/2-1gallon of oj per day + 1/2-1gallon of Milos sweet tea per day, plus any other liquid I wish (NO ALCOHAL). But, If I eat even one small bite of any type of meat (no soups either, no broth) no matter how it is cooked it hits like a ton of bricks and I always vomit within 15-30minutes and I usually feel a little "lite headed" for the next 24-48 hours. My blood work is fine and I have lost around 120lbs since 6-2-05 and am having no other type of problems. My wife had GBS on 7-7-05 and has lost 40+ lbs and she is the complete opposite of me as far a diet. She is able to eat meets but NO sugar. Anyone else out there having this "problem". I have been told that everyone is different and that after 4-6months I should be able to eat more things than I do now. — Todd S. (posted on August 13, 2005)

You need to talk to your surgeon. You should have been able to digest meats and fish by now. Even though it is fantastic that you have lost so much already; you are not getting proper nurtition.

When did it start? I would pursue an appt with your doctor for a scope to see why you do not tolerate healthy foods. Most often the problem is easily fixed. However, the things you are consuming can bring you right on up and past your start wt. I know, I know, you're losing NOW, but all that sugar! OMG! That is not meant as a slam or critque of you as a person, just as a warning that the one thing that will fatten us back up is sugar and/or grazing. I would hate to see your forfeit your wt loss at the 2 year mark because you never got in the habit of avoiding sugar and eating more meats & veggies NOW. So, the first step it to make that possible for you.

What was the point of having this new tool for losing weight if your going to eat all of that wasted crap? Stick to the plan your doctor suggested. Have youve asked them why yet?

Ok, first off, you're eating the wrong things. Sorry, but that's the absolute truth. I am 20 months out and if I ate anywhere the amount and things you are eating, I would be right back up over 300 pounds! From my own experience (I don't dump either), you need to get off the sugars and carbs...NOW. If you don't, your weight loss will slow and start going the other way. You have got to get protein in. Have you tried the protein shakes? You can get unflavored if you don't like any of the flavored ones. What about veggies? Fruits are high sugar as is juice...you need to be limiting these. Can you do fish at all? You need to see your surgeon and let him know what you are eating and drinking (be honest) and what you cannot eat. He may have some suggestions for you. What did you eat on the pureed or soft foods portion of the diet? Go back to the beginning...sf products only...and start over. See if that helps. Yes, you will be able to eat more things the further out you are, but you also need to be eating right now. Good luck.

Todd, because you are only 2 months out your blood work may not show any problems yet. Some things take a while to show a defeciency. I am very concerned about what you are eating. There are many people that are unable to eat meat following surgery, and I have friends whos surgeon restricted meats for the first year. (One is 6 years post op and has been a vegetarian since surgery) The thing is, you can not replace meat with junk food. The very fact that you were brave enough to try chips, cookies, and other crap is not good. You are drinking an insane amount of calories each day with that OJ and sweet tea. Cut back on the OJ and use splenda in the tea, you will regret not making changes now.
Please contact your surgeon and explain your problem with eating meats. They can suggest and alternative or find out if there is a problem. This is important.
Todd, if you don't get a hold of this now, your surgery will eventually fail. I know you don't want to go thru all of the pain and frustration of this surgery to fail...seek assistance now, hun. I really wish you the best! Good Luck

Todd, yours is a diet for disaster. You are imbibing outrageous amounts of sugar and no protein. Your body may be losing, but you may be losing whatever muscle mass you started with. This could eventually affect your heart. I am 6 months post op and experienced nausea with protein from the get go. I still get nauseous on the protein shakes and sometimes on regular protein, but I buck up and eat/drink them anyway. I have to to stay healthy. It has actually gotten better the further out I get. Now, I have never vomited. It seems impossible for me. I have had the dry heaves but nothing but froth comes up. So if this is what is happening, the protein is still staying down. You need to find some proteins that are a little better and just eat those for a while. Also, do not eat anything dry. Make sure it has a sauce or is very moist. This includes eggs. The drier the protein, the worse the nausea when I eat. I find that a good lubricating sauce really helps. Lastly, stop testing the waters to see how much sugar you can get away with without dumping. You shouldn't be eating this junk. Eventually, you will stop losing and this will catch up to you. Believe me, even at 6 months out, I now have to work to lose weight. Not only that, but sugar will mess with your insulin levels and you are going to end up feeling hungry within no time after eating and wanting to graze all day. PLEASE TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR AND TRY TO CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS!!!! I'M WORRIED ABOUT YOU!

Todd, you are getting some great advice here. These people know what they are talking about. So here's my advice, I suggest trying shrimp or shrimp cocktail. CHEW, CHEW, CHEW... eat slow and chew your meat. The more tender, the better. Hope this helps.
