Question:
Has anyone else had No Bowel Movement since surgery?
I had the surgery 4/19/05 and it has been a week. So what do I do? — Blkdiamondice (posted on April 25, 2005)

The same thing happened to me.........I went almost two weeks. My doctor
had advised me to take milk of magnesia. I didn't do it and I regretted
it!. I didn't think you could get constipated on a liquid diet but I
definitely was and it was extremely painful. I'd say call your doctor and
ask...he will probably have a preference in what you do.

Same thing happened to me, after 9 days I called my surgeon! He told me to
take some Milk of Magnesia, and it worked quickly thank God!
Don't let constipation go on for long, okay???!!!

I took some docusate sodium last night. I had surgery on 4-20 and I had a
BM today. Well, really 2 liquid ones. NOT my normal BM, but I'm not
surprised.

No, but I had surgery on the 28th of March and I was scared that I might
not have one but I started drinking decaf coffee about every other day and
that cleans me out. Or you might try some sort of fiber drink you find in
the store. You should ask your doctor though before using the fiber.

Yes that is normal, because your body is not really taking in anything to
let out...i had my surgery on march 31st and i have only went about 4 times
since then.

First, are you feeling constipated? If you are you can take over the
counter laxatives to assist. But call your surgeon first and find out what
he likes his patients to use. I hope this helps.

My surgeon suggested that I take Colace for constipation instead of
laxitives. He told me that if you take laxatives, your bowel will become
dependant on them and encouraged me never to take them. Hope this helps.

Well, I don't think it's ok to go without having a bm for so long. I had
lap and had two bm's before even leaving the hospital. I would encourage
you to call your doctor, follow his guidance, and then get yourself in a
routine. Good luck, and a speedy recovery!

Hmmm. So far (15 surgeries) I've never been released from the hospital
UNTIL I've had a bowel movement. I'd call your surgeon now. Tell him. I
would'nt wait on this.

You have to consider the fact that you are only consumming liquids right
now. Also need to keep in mind that your intestines were rerouted and
they need to heal before they begin to funtion. If you have a feeling like
you need to have a bowel movement, which I did one week out I chewed a
x-lax and used a fleet glycerin suppository, which worked for me.

Talk to your surgeon. I spoke to the Nursing PA & she suggested
Colace. I popped it (as it's a gel cap) & squeezed out the liquid into
a protein shake. (This was 4 days after I got home from the hosp. &
hadn't gone since diarrhea in the hosp.). It worked the next day &
I've gone everyday except one since.
Good luck.
