Question:
I have no supervised diet history but plenty of other diet....
Hi, I have no supervised diet history, where except I went to my Dr. and recived pill, and a eating plan, but did not lose enough to afford to go back....I do have A 120 day atkins journal from the Atkins diet, plus 11 pages of every diet or diet pill, or exercise book, tape I own and tried.....do you think this is enough to get apporval? I have blue cross/blue shield-federal? Plus I am 20 years old. — trstears (posted on April 10, 2005)

I had blue cross and all i needed to do was supply the info i had the
dates of all the diets i ever tried and docters and that was good enough,
actually it was alot easier than i thought, they never ask for anything
else just the information. I was approved before i got my medical testing
done...took about 3 weeks.

Hi, the 6 month supervised diet is...we...a gray area. Some insurances want
a strict 6 months of supervvision, and some will go with a note from your
pcp saying that after several attempts at deiting nothing works.

It will probably depend on your insurance. I have United HealthCare/POS and
had to provide a 6-month doctor supervised diet within the past 12 months
and a 5-year medical history of morbid obesity. All you can do is try and
see if they will accept it. Also, ask the insurance coordinator of the
surgeon you plan on using, they usually know what each insurance company
wants. Good luck!!!

I didn't have to show proof that I participated in weight watchers or any
other exercise programs that I attempted, but my insurance approved without
any questions. I have preferred one and some people were telling me that I
needed to see a dietician 3 times before they would approve me, but that
was not true. You should contact your insurance company and see what they
say. Good Luck!

I have BCBS HMO, and they made me do a year supervised diet before they
would give me a refferal to a surgeon and I am still not approved.

I have united health care PPO. And I just really listed a couple of diets,
and I was approved. Also list a couple more. Do you have any medical
problems such as diabetes?

Hi Tama, I too have BC/BS Fed(PPO). My surgeons office said that I may need
supervised diet history also. I told them of all the different ways that I
tried to loose weight (ie. slimfast, acutrim pills as well as dexatrim
pills and just plain starvation.) I have no other medical problems
(diabities, high blood pressure...). But my BMI was around 53 and I was,
before WLS, 200# over what my weight should be. I was approved with no
trouble.
I am 29 days post-op.
Good luck to you.
