Question:
Why are my fingernails breaking? I have always had really strong nails. I am 6 1/2

months post-op and in the last 2 weeks my fingernails just peel off. What can I do?    — Sharon P. (posted on November 18, 2004)

I agree with the other poster. I've never had fingernails but I started taking Biotin and they are terrific now. Long and strong. It'll help the hair too........might not keep you from losing it but definitely seems to help when it starts growing back. I always had thin hair too and it is now thickening up.

Do you take pre-natal vitamins? I do and my nails grow so fast that after about 4 weeks I HAVE to cut them down because they get so long. If you don't, you might want to ask your doctor for a prescription for them.

I believe your fingernails are doing that due to vitamin defencies (sp). I recommend like the other post get you some vitamins, GNC sells biotin 2500mcg and they work, I take this and I am pre-op and also the pre-natal vits are good also. Good Luck!!!!

Your B12 is sublingual? I'd 'make that 2000mg/day if it's calcium citrate, 2 multi vites, and dry form A, D, E. Just because I am so protein oriented, even as a proximal, I'd be going for 90g protein supplment, plus food, of course. Sounds like someething is in short demand and your body has chosen to not feed the nails as the least important piece of real estate to fuel.

It might sound odd, my did the same thing and the only other time that happened to me was when I was anemic. So, how is your iron level?

How is your hair? Bear in mind our fingernails are actually molecularly related to our hair. If your hair is thinning, falling out to medication or lack of nutrition, or weight loss surgery, your nails will suffer as well. Whatever nutrients you take for your hair will also help your nails. Also, if you are filing and using nail polish at this time, stop. Let them breath. Buff only, and up your nutrients to improve strength.

Because your fingernails are made from protein and it takes protein to feed them so they remain healthy. They will eventually get better, mine did. I had horrible unhealthy nails for 2 years prior to surgery, infact my thumb nails would split vertically. After I was finally getting all my protein in that I needed they stopped doing that and not they are really nice looking.
