Question:
Are sugar alcohols safe for RNY patients?

Are the new no sugar/low sugar food products that may not contain sugar but have sugar alcohol listed as an ingredient a good option for post-op RNY patients? Robert S 270/235/154    — Robert S. (posted on October 26, 2004)

NO NO NO NO I tried that in the begining and I really regretted it. The sugar alcohol made me sicker than just eating the stupid candy I wanted in the first place. I felt like I wanted to die. That's just my opinion, but if you crave sweets that badly, just eat a snack size candy bar and take your chances that way, or just a few chocolate chips.

I'm with the other poster, sugar alcohol makes me so totally sick, If I try a new protein bar or sugar free anything-I look for sugar alcohols--and then I turn the other way, it is such an awful sick, that it would only take one time for you to never try it again. I like the Atkins Morning Start Brownie Muffin Bars, they only have 1 sugar alcohol, with 2 net carbs, and only 150 calories. I usually eat 1/2 a bar mid-morning, and the other 1/2 mid-afternoon, it kinda keeps the cravings for sweets away. Hope this helps. 325/182

Everyone is different, so there is no text-book answer. They make me totally miserable... gas, bloating, diarehha.

I don't dump on them but the gas is unbelievable. They usually also have all the calories of the regular product. I was using them a lot for a period of time, but couldn't take the smell, and concerned about the excess calories making me regain so I have pretty much eliminated them except for very rare circumstances.

Everyone is different I don't have problems with sugar alcohol. But the labels do say that excess consumption could have a laxitive effect. So if I'm really wanting something sweet and sugar free I would only go for one piece and stop at that. just to curb the craving.

Sugar alcohols made me run out and buy Devrom and eat Gas-X like it was going out of style. I finally figured out the connection and decided I was better off eating the real sugar as I could tolerate it and the gas was not an issue. The smell of the gas was so bad that I wanted to leave my body outside and get away from it. LOL Like others said, it will vary drastically from person to person. The bottom line is the calories are still there, so be cautious.
