Question:
I was just wondering if you can change your mind on the type of surgery
you want to have after talking to the surgeon. We had talked about open, but now I am really considering Lap. Does anyone know if that is ok to do? — Paula3229 (posted on February 28, 2004)

Well for me my 'change' of mine came after surgery (little late - dollar
short) IF I could go back and 're-do' I would have gone for the DS because
of the RNY stoma problems. As far as lap vs open; I had already decided on
open.. so it didnt matter. THe main thing is go for what YOU want .. if
you want lap go for it; or at least ask yoru doctor about it if you
qualify. NOT everyone qualifies for lap...

With less pain, from less trauma of cutting the body and less hernia risk
LAP is very popular, and saves hospital days too. It costs more but
insurance pays for it since overall it saves money. My surgeons patients
average stay is just about 2 days and we laps are feekling better faster
too. Super morbids and those with lots of previous belly surgeries
sometimes have trouble finding a surgeon who can do them LAP. See my
profile for detailed post op activities

Technically it would be the same type of surgery (i.e. RNY or DS or VBG),
the only thing that changes is the access the surgeon uses to get inside
the abdominal cavity. If your surgeon you have chosen has a lot of
experience with performing surgeries via Lap, and he feels you are a good
candidate, it should not be a big deal to switch. I had open, but that was
because I had a previous surgery and my surgeon felt I would have too many
adhesions to do the surgery by Lap. Good luck. Remember, just make sure
he/she has a lot of Lap experience.

I changed my mind after meeting with my surgeon twice and I am very glad
that I did. I was going to have the Adjustable Band but changed to Lap RNY.
However they did have to start the insurance process all over. Go with what
you want even if it means you have to have a later date, you should be
happy with your choice. GOOD LUCK!!

Paula, I clicked on your Dr.'s link from your profile page & it looks
like she does both lap & open. I don't see a problem in switching,
just tell her. P.S. Try a different psychologist for your evaluation and I
doubt going on an antidepressant for awhile will slow things down. Good
luck -Linda
