Question:
Losing to much?

I'm 6 months post op and only have 20 more pounds to lose to get to my ideal weight. I think I may end up losing 'too much'. I was wondering who may have lost 'too much' and what are you doing to 'find' it again LOL. Just curious.    — Julie S. (posted on February 23, 2004)

Julie, I remember saying the same thing at 6 months out because at that time I was still losing at least 10-12 lbs per month. I'm now 9 months post op and still have 8 lbs to go... lol. I figure what's my hurry now, I have another good 9 months "window" to work off this last 8 lbs and then maybe another 10 just for bouncing room. My WL slowed so dramatically at 6 months it was depressing, but hey... now I exercise so much more and really enjoy it. Take care and God bless! Lisa A Lap RNY 5/13/03 -133 291/158/150

I've never seen anyone STAY too thin. Many of us touch too thin briefly, but it doesn't pay to try to fix it. There is bounceback anyway, so you want to be sure you're low when it happens and then you can bounceback (with no effort) to a reasonable wt and hopefully maintain it with reasonable (not superhuman) effort. I have seen people try to correct the too thin period by eating carbs and then cannot stop the upswing. We'll be fighting the regain soon enough, so there is NO hurry to get there.

my docs were worried that I was losing too much a couple of months ago. i was already 15 pounds under their goal for me or what they thought I should be with no signs of slowing down. They told me to add more carbs, eat more high calorie foods, eat frequent snacks and drink a little with my meals. i did and have gained seven pounds (I think( back. I feel so stuffed all the time though so the last three days, I have stopped all that and have lost about three pounds. I shouldn't ever had worried about losing too much but i was looking haggard. I am back down to 133 and am going to get back to the 125 I was at and shut my mouth about losing too much. I gained really fast when I implemented their suggestions and that is just too scary. Good luck.

I wouldnt worry about it. I got to goal FAST, ended up underweight and now fight regain. Your body knows when to stop consider yourself fortunate and enjoy the ride.

If you would have asked me at 9 months post op if I would end up too thin, I would have said it was very likely. Now at almost 13 months out, I feel like the only person in the world that isn't happy at 137 pounds!!! At about 11 months I was in to see my surgeon and told him that I still wanted to try to lose some more weight and that I thought that was a bit obsessed with 'just another 10 pounds' and he said to go ahead and lose while I could and that they wouldn't want me to do anything about it unless I got to a BMI of 19 or less! Well, for me at 5'7" that would allow me to get down to 123 pounds! I have also been told, several times now, that most people gain up to 10% of the weight they lost as 'bounce back' weight! Yikes! That really has me hoping I can get down to the 120's so I can bounce back to where I am now. Of course, nothing I do seems to be working at this point...so, I'm not holding my breath! So, I guess I would suggest the same thing to you...lose while you can...the ride doesn't last forever and it's much easier to gain a few pounds than to lose a few more! Good luck to you!

I looked at your profile and it looks like your BMI was 37 before you had surgery which means you started out closer to goal than most folks, so of course you are probably getting there sooner. Weight loss does slow down the further out you are from surgery and if you do see yourself getting lower than goal there are things that drs do suggest for that type of problem. Supplementing with higher calorie shakes and believe it or not snacking regularly between meals, on healthy things of course. I only know of one person who really got too thin and it actually has caused her health problems, tube feedings and all but she had lots of problems such as having pain when she was eating and the drs could not find the reason for it. She is still chronically underweight.
