Question:
Did you ever think you might have choses the wrong surgery??????
I'm 9 weeks out from open RNY and think I may have choses the wrong surgery type. I think I should have gone with BPD/DS. I just read a quote from another support group my surgon has. "RNY is a TOOL, BPD/DS is a NO BRAINER." Has anyone else ever felt this way, that you went with the wrong surgery type???? Thanks, Robin W — Robin W. (posted on January 20, 2004)

It's my understanding, all the surgeries are tools and it IS possible to
out eat any of them. I can pray that my RNY will help me to change my
eating habits, but it does require discipline.

Hi Robin,
It's kind of late to be worrying about whether or not you had the wrong
surgery now. Also be assured, there are many folks who have been highly
successful with the RNY, and you can be, too. It will require a lot more
disciipline long-term, but use the tool you have been given. There is no
use in crying over spilled milk. Besides--the DS is not for everyone. It is
up to each of us to do serious and extensive research on all the different
bariatric surgeries before making that life-changing decision.
<p>'Shoulda coulda woulda' never did any body any good. Just make it
work. I know you can do it if you set your mind to it. Now, just enjoy this
awesome first year. You are in for the ride of your life. Best wishes to
you.

Don't worry about it. All places have they're "GIMMICKS"!! You
did what you thought was right, go with it and make the best of it.
You'll do great!!!!!!!

Hi Robin, I felt the exact same way when I found out about DS. I thought
I had done a lot of research but I didn't even know about the DS until
after I had had my RNY. I was upset about it for a while but I have just
decided that what's done is done and I now have to start my new life and
hope that my RNY was enough. You will just have to do the same. I wish
you the best of luck! I am 6 months out and down about 80lbs so it is
working for me, even though a little more slowly than others :o)

Hello, in the very beginning I was trying to decide which wls to have. I
found out the DS was the worse as far as malabsorption and sometimes caused
problems in the longrun. It was very difficult to locate a Dr. in the state
where I lived that still did this type of surgery due to that very reason.
Just know that you made the right choice in the surgery you had...after
all, everything worked out for you to get this done right? As you get
father down the road and the weight continues to come off you'll feel much
better about all this. God Bless You on your Journey. :)

Thanks EVERONE. It's nice to know there are others out there like you and
had second thoughts. I think I must be in one of those WLS MOOD SWINGs. It
helped a lot to read the replies. Thanks again, Robin W

You have to work hard with all these surgeries once you hit about 6 months
out. Anyone who does this surgery thinking it works magic is in for a
rough road and possible weight regain.

The DS is not for everyone and unless your surgeon told you that the DS was
a better choice for you, then I would be happy with what you have. The DS
has alot more malabsorbtion and if the DS'ers are not consistent with their
supplementing, vitamins it will have terrible health consequences for them.
Also many DS'ers (NOT ALL) have bathroom problems, having several bowel
movements a day, to include some who have severe diahrea problems (again,
not all). The DS also does not have the sugar/dumping like the RNY and for
some they need to have the dumping to help keep them away from the foods
that made them obese. I think the DS is appropriate for some but not for
all and since you already have the RNY, enjoy it!

Before my RNY surgery, I also had second thoughts. I kept going back and
forth thinking about the Lap Band. Even after surgery, when I was so sick,
I thought, "This wouldn't be happening if I had the Lap Band!"
But now, 6 months later, I realize I made the right choice. The RNY was
the best thing for me.

Robin, I just want to encourage you!!!!
I have the BPD/DS and FOR ME it was the right surgery. Unfortunately, some
people have to make a surgery decision based on what their ins. will cover.
I think your hormones are in a tizzy. Give this time. Dsn't mean the RNY
was wrong for you. Your emotional(as we all have been 2 months post op)and
we all certainly understand that. You made a choice with the information
you had at the time. Dsn't mean it was right or wrong. Put the "I
should haves" behind you!!!They do you no good. The RNY is not a bad
surgery and this can/will be successful for you. Follow your program. I
think you can subconsciously sabotage yourself here because "you
think" you may have made a mistake. Guess what-maybe you didn't! You
need time. Your body feels like crap because of all you've been thru and
all the changes you're about to make. You have many life changes ahead.
Make your smart decisions about program and what you need to do and stop(or
don't start)comparing yourself to others, what they do/did etc...Robins
body is going to do what her body needs to do. Drink your water!!!!So very
important. Self doubt does you no good. You made a change for a reason. One
of them I bet was to live your life. I encourage you to do so. Don't get
"stuck" over this.
Just because I can eat more dsn't mean I do. I have had to learn to eat
when satisfied, not necessarily full. The BPD/DS is NOT always a NO
BRAINER! I personally love mine but that's what was right for me. The only
reason I would consider a revision is if I had many difficulties such as
dilating the stoma multiple times, staple disruption etc...You're not even
giving this a chance. I bet once you feel better overall you'll change your
decision. Hang in there. Be nice to yourself. If you have to repeat to
yourself why you chose the surgery you did!

Robin, I know exactly how you feel. I had reservations in the beginning,
because it was difficult for me to eat anything. I became malnourished.
Imagine that!! an overweight person practically all of my life and I'm
malnourished. I had to have my stoma dilated, and even then, I still had
problems. Now, I don't. What I like best about this surgery is I am
eating much healthier, as well as my family. I make much better food
choices for us all. My children are living healthier lives as a result of
my surgery. I too had a RNY, and although my weight loss has been slow, it
is steady. After all, It took me 5 long years to pack on 125 pounds, and I
know it won't take that long to burn it off. I have much more energy, I
can walk around the mall without chronic backaches or frequent rest
periods, I am off the c-pap machine for sleep apnea, I will soon be off the
blood pressure medicines, and I can even see my feet when I stand up
straight!! I have a long way to go, but I have come a mighty long way.
Never give up, keep working at it. I seriously thought I made a big
mistake, especially when I would go out to restuarant to eat, and could not
eat. That's not the case now. I don't eat near as much as I used too, but
I can go out, and casually eat while making good food choices. I no longer
regret the surgery, I just wish I had done this sooner!! Keep your head up
GURL!!! Prayer always works, and hard work won't hurt either.

Robin, it's me again. What is a no brainer? You can eat whatever you want?
Is that really healthier for you in the long run? You will change your
whole life with the surgery you had, all for the better. You're just 9
weeks out, trust me, it will get better.
