Question:
Survey for very infrequent or non-dumpers

Fellow non-dumpers - I have a theory, and wanted to get some empirical evidence to support (or disprove) from those who would know. My theory is that those who seem to be non-dumpers (or dump VERY infrequently) tend to consume less fluid during the day than those who dump regularly. If you are a non- or very infrequent dumper, can you let me know how much fluid you consume during the day (on average)? Thanks!    — sweetmana (posted on November 8, 2003)

I drink at least the 64 oz of liquids each day. I'm 9 months post op and have never dumped. But I really haven't had any fatty or sugary foods to date.

Maybe 50-75 oz if I'm lucky.

Non-dumper here. I, however, drink alot of fluid a day. I take in on the average 96oz a day and that is in water only. I will also have some crystal light on some days along with my water intake. Wish your theory was true- I would drink more water if I had the side effect of dumping.

I get 80 to 96 ounces of noncarbonated, nonsugared, caffeine-free liquids a day. While dumping syndrome is not fully understood, the medical coomunity does know that it's caused by sugar and/or fat being "dumped" too quickly into the small intestine. In normal stomachs, food is churned and digested in the stomach before being slowing released into the intestine through the pyloric valve. We no longer have that regulating mechanism, so food dumps directly into the small intestine without the churning or modified release. Since the small intestine is not used to, and is not designed to, digest sugar and fats in their raw form, it reacts by trying to get rid of the offending material, so it rushes liquids to the small intestine, resulting in diarrhea, and the heart palpitations, etc. that we experience. What they don't know is why some people don't react this way. I doubt it has to do with liquid consumption.

I haven't dumped yet and I have had some sweets(halloween size chocolate bars) since surgery on Aug7/03. I drink between 40 and 60 oz of water a day plus 1 tea, 1 hot chocolate made with skim milk and 1 or 2 protein shakes made with skim milk. So my liquid intake is pretty good. My theory on dumping is that it all depends on your body chemistry, that is why each of us has a different tolerance for sugar in our system.

Non-dumper here, averaging about 120+ oz. of either water or decaf tea daily. Data isn't supporting your theory yet, but it's a great hypothesis!

I have a friend who doesn't dump. She ate sugar in small doses when she was new post-op then increased gradually. I would never want to do that, as I need to dump! But it worked for her. She drinks about 100 oz a day of liquids.

I seem to fit your theory... I rarely dump (only if i eat too much sugar (like 3 pieces of chocolate) and I don't drink that much fluids daily... even though I know i should be. sounds like your theory hasnt gotten that much support, but you never know....

I've only dumped once when I was about nine months out and I don't drink enough water. The only time I dumped was when drinking egg nog which was more sugar then I had been used to consuming.

I only dumped once at 5 wweeks Post-op and was when I ate no-sugar-added TCBY. Doctor says to much sugar. I drink about 40-50 OZ water a day.

I get loads of liquids during the day (probably at least 100 ounces), and have not "dumped" yet, though I've certainly consume way past enough sugar to do so. (17 months post-op.)

9 mos PO and no dumping. I drink anywhere from about 40-120 oz a day. Don't intentionally do the 40 but sometimes I just forget to drink.

The only thing I dump on is sugar and that only happened once. I ate 3/4 of a cupcake with all the frosting. I did not get sick, but I felt like I could not keep my eyes open. I crashed! I drink about 32 oz. a day, can't do more, but I try.

I drink over 100 oz. a day and dump very, very, infrequently, so I don't think that's the reason. I wish I could dump, maybe I wouldn't be so tempted to consume sugary, white, floury stuff! 17 months post-op 248 to 130, still smiling!

How do you guys do 100oz a day??? I feel like I have a water bottle attached to my lips and can get in 80oz if I really really push it. Maybe that's why I'm stuck on a plateau from hell.

You'll have to let us know the results of your study! I have dumped - and not very severely - maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 7 months. I definitely do not get enough liquids in. Maybe 40 ounces a day. I was a water freak pre-op, and now just can't stomach it. I drink alot of Minute Maid light lemonade - non-carbonated, non-caffeine, only 10 calories, no sugar. But still only drink maybe 2 glasses of water and two cans of the minute maid... :-( Open RNY 03/20/03 326/225/146

I don't dump on anything except ice cream, and I don't drink a fraction as much water as I should be drinking. Very interesting study.

Your question made me stop and figure out how much fluid I'm taking in - thanks! I figure I'm getting around 90-100 oz per day of water, decaf tea, and Crystal Light (sometimes I'll have a little diluted orange juice). I'm 2 months post-op and have not dumped so far. And I admit I've tested the waters a few times! I see another poster mentioned only being bypassed 75cm - that goes for me too. I'm anxious to find out what your results will be. Thank you for the interesting question.

2 1/2plus years post-op. Can count on 1 hand how many times I've dumped, and not even use all those fingers. Ate canned fruit once that I thought was "lite" syrup, it wasn't. I NEVER eat sugar! Also have gotten very sick a couple of times in the beginning from eating too fas---that made me eat too much. Ugh, worse than dumping. Hit me in the head but I've learned to eat slow, chew-chew-chew and let my head catch up with my stomach. As fo fluid, I get in 80-100 ounces a day, non caffine. Yes, I have cafine in the morning, but don't count it as my fluid. And yes, I think my hand is now formed into a "permannt grip" of a water bottle. Small sacrifice. Freinds, Family and co-workers are all accustomed to me and my bottle. If I don't have it, they ask if I forgot it!! Lots of Love, Good Luck!!
