Question:
DO we need to take in more than 30g of protein in order to aborb 30g?
I have read many many times from several sources that we absorb only 30g of protein at a time. So do we take in more in order to get the 30 or just 30 and think that we absorb 100 per cent. I am cornfused. — snicklefritz (posted on October 18, 2003)

Whey protein we absorb 100%. So protein drink protein is 100%. Food
protein you might want to (if possible) eat a bit more of.

As Myra said all proteins are not equal. Soy shakes are not complete
protein sources and not 100% absorbed. Whey on the other hand is 100%
absorbable. Unless you had a particularly malabsorptive procedure you
should count all of your calories as absorbed and then track your level of
malabsorbtion by calories in (what you eat) versus weight lost. I have
found that I lose about 1/3 more than the calories and expenditures of
energy could explain. I also have found that as I near a goal I have to be
stricter with the calories although I do eat more than I did in the first 6
months.
