Question:
Has anyone else had to get preapproval from Insurance before a surgeon
will give you 1st consultation? Sounds weird.....I need a surgeon to tell me what info I need to get the approval? Suggestions anyone? — Katherine G. (posted on October 10, 2003)

Since my PCP had to refer me to a different clinic for my WLS adventure,
I've had preapproval for all of my visits whether it was for endocrinology,
sleep study, psych, dietician, or surgeon. Periodically, I get a letter
from the insurance company that I am approved for x number more visits or
the last one was specifically for the sleep study. So far it has all gone
smoothly. Hopefully when it is time to approve the surgery, it will go
equally well. :))

I had to call my ins. and verify that the procedure/doctor/hosp. was even
covered, get a referral from my primary, then, go to a information meeting,
fill out tons of paperwork. Then, I was able to make an appointment with
the nurse who then submitted paperwork to the insurance company all before
they would even schedule an appointment with the surgeon. From what I've
heard, that's pretty typical.
