Question:
I like to hear from someone whom had both Open RNY and Gallbladder removal same time
I would really like to hear from someone out there who had both the gallbladder removed and open RNY in the same same time on what to expect for recovery time and discomfort. Thanks in advance. My procedures take place on October 6, 2003. Hugs — Tove Annelise H. (posted on September 14, 2003)

Tove Lee ~ There are many surgeons who perform both procedures at the same
time. I had my Open surgery on 1/3/03 and the gallbladder was removed at
the same time. I had no problems at all. I was up walking within 18 hours
of the surgery and truly do not feel the additional work caused any more
pain. I'm really glad he removed the GB ~ he said it had several small
stones....had he not done so at the time, I'd be dealing with that problem
down the road. Congratulations on your upcoming Surgery! You're going to
do great and will be experiencing the benefits in no time!! Open RNY

I am 5 1/2 weeks post op, and I had a open rny and my gallbladder removed.
I was up and moving around the first night in the hospital, I do not think
there is much difference from just a open rny, when I am healing inside,
and it itches like crazy, the area of the gallbladder itches also, with a
gallbladder it probley would not itch. That is the only thing I can think
of, no pain from were the gb was removed.

I had both procedures at the same time, I do not think my recovery was any
different than those that kept there gallbladders. I was up by 6 pm the
eve of my surgery, walking. And I was released after 3 days in the
hospital, standard for all OPEN RNY patients my surgeon does.

My surgeon automatically removes the gall bladder at same time open RNY. I
understand that a big percentage of WLS patients end up having gall bladder
removed due to drastic weight loss. I'm not sure what that means. My gall
bladder was in fine health, but the doc was welcome to take any excess
parts he wanted as long as he was in there. You will never know which hurt
is the gall bladder and which hurt is JUST the RNY. ;)

Nearly anyone who loses weight has issues with their gallbladder. For some
reason even a small weight loss of 20-30 lbs can result in problems. And
with large weight loss it usually is severe. Why have vomiting/nausea/pain
a few months after your major surgery & have to have more surgery?? I
opted to have it out at the same time and was I ever glad. Usually
gallbladder removal is done as an outpatient as a lap procedure now-a-days,
so it would be very unusual for it to be a problem when it is a minor
secondary procedure when having major surgery. You'll be focused on the
primary incision and won't even know your gallbladder was removed! Good
Luck with your surgery!!

I had both wls and galbladder removal, and I'll put it this way, if no one
had told me that my gallbladder had been taken out I never would have
noticed the difference! It didn't cause me any extra recovery time.

I had both procedures done at the same time. It was done open because the
bile duct to my gallbladder was larger than normal and my surgeon would not
have been able to get inside of it if my surgery was done lap. Anyway, I
was in the hospital from Tuesday to Sunday morning. I choose to stay an
extra day and I needed someone to help me at home for about a week. I have
a 3 year old. But if I HAD to be alone I would have been ok. I used pain
meds in the hospital for the first few days then once I got home I only
used them at night before I went to bed. I guess I made myself a little
more uncomfortable then I probably would have been. I was so afraid I was
going to hurt something, I was walking around hunched over...lol Probably
didnt need to do that though. It was a little discomfort but not bad at
all. Good luck to you!!!!

I had both done. I was surprised to know I had gallstones but that makes
me realize I had some episode that I just thought were gas, but most likely
was gallstones. Recovery went well, I did have some pain in the areas
where inside stuff was done, but was off pain meds in a week.
