Question:
Why are post-ops not allowed to have skin from fruit and things such as hot dogs?

Early on they can get stuck but once your out a bit they are fine. I love fruit like grapefruit. Eat mostly a corn dog from time to time. Our support groups picnic food was hot dogs, but I dont eat a lot of them.

actually I was not aware of the not eating skins until a couple weeks ago, not something mentioned in the VERY extensive book of instructions given me by BTC. I have eaten fruit skins ever since I got up the nerve to eat fruit a couple months post op. never a bit of problem with them either

I have never heard not to eat hotdogs and i eat one every once in a while or a corndog. The membrane on citrus fruit can get stuck in your pouch and even if they don't get stuck are very hard to digest.

It is just early on that you have to stay away from skins from fruit and hot dogs. I also had to stay away from seeds and nuts also, but I still do that on the seeds because I have diverticulosis. The skins can be hard to digest and be an irritant to the digestive track. After I was 8 weeks post I could eat the skins again after the new pouch was healed more.

I hadn't heard the one about hot dogs, but my nutritionist told me grapes, raisins, citrus rind, those things don't digest, can clog and irritate your system.

I tried an apple today at 9 weeks out. Within 20 minutes I was in the bathroom bringing it back up. A piece of skin slipped past and I swallowed it. I could see how big it was and knew there was no way it would have gone through. Every so often I have trouble with swallowing before I am really ready too. It's just a reaction when food hits the back part of my mouth. It's amazing how much concentration good chewing habits take.

Too hard to digest early out. At about 12 months out, that changes, though...! :~)

If you have ever had something get stuck you'll know why. It HURTS so bad you'll wish someone would shoot you to put you out of your misery. It only takes one time and you wont do it again. After about 6 months I had no problems with a little bit of hot dog but I still peel all my fruits and veggies. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 115

I am 10 months out and eat just about everything except carrots, they still get stuck no matter how much I chew. I cut grapes in 1/2 then eat that way I am sure no whole skin slips down. Just remember to chew well and nothing should be a problem.
