Question:
Has anyones wl surgeon removed their apron?

I have heard that some wl surgeons have done this. also if I had a hernia at the same time I get my apron removed. I would think a plastic surgeon couldn't do it. or can they?    — Naes Wls J. (posted on August 31, 2003)

Nadine, I have heard of a few people having their WLS surgeon remove their aprons. In February I had surgery to fix a hernia along with a lower body lift. A plastic surgeon did both. He fixed the hernia and removed my apron.

Hi Nadine: I have heard the same thing, but I'd prefer to have a plastic surgeon do that kind of surgery. Unless of course it was just done at the time of the original WLS then I'd be ok with the WL surgeon doing it. I have actually heard of that at least once and it kind of sounds like a good idea. Especially for people like me who probably don't qualify for the panni or TT even after getting down to, or close to, goal. I think a plastic surgeon could probably also repair a hernia at the same time you had a TT or panni, but if it were me I'd try to get a general sugeon to do the hernia and have the plastic surgeon do the tummy tuck at the same time. It's common to have 2 surgeons in the operating room at the same time anyway, so why not have both just do their own specialty? Either way would be fine though, I'm sure. Good luck. S

Hi Nadine, My aunt had wls in the early 80's and her surgeon did a tummy tuck at the Same time he did the wls!

My WLS removed my panni, gall bladder, and fixed a couple of rather large hernias all at one time. I have seen his work regarding the skin removal on other patients and was pleased with their results. I knew he was not a plastic surgeon, but was qualified to suit me. 6 months later, I am very happy with the results, and it seems to be improving every week.

We didn't talk in great detail about it but I got the impression that my surgeon ends up being an assistant to the plastic surgeon. Just things he said makes me believe he would be in on the surgery, but he did reference a plastic surgeon. I had asked about getting insurance approval is where his comments came in. I think it may acutally be cheaper if you have it done by a plastic surgeon that has his own operating suite. I'll be finding out some more info soon as I have a consult in a week from today. I don't have a hernia so that won't help me with approval.

My plastic surgeon is going to do my hernia repair and tummy tuck. Keep in mind that plastic surgeons have all of the training of general surgeons and then some.
