Question:
Why do the doctors tell post-ops not to drink from straws?

I think it is because it causes to much air to get into the new pouch.
Watch out for the sippy cups also, if they are not the kind of sippy cup
that has a second hole, you will get so much air inside of your tummy.

I actually wasn't told that, and I drink my protein drink through a straw
every morning so I don't get that fluffy stuff from the top.
I guess one idea might be that when you sip through a straw you don't get
the same perception of how much you are taking in - and wind up taking in
too much???

wasn't told that by my doc and haven't had any trouble with it. I have
sensative teeth so if a drink is cold I use a straw.

I was told not to due to air going into your pouch.

A lot of surgeons (not just WLS) discourage their patients from drinking
from straws because it causes gas. My surgeon allowed us to drink from
straws and he encouraged us to chew gum as it wakes up the digestive
system.

It puts air into your pouch.

Some say it is because you will get extra air that way, on my paper work it
says you can use a straw so it just depends on your beleifs I guess!

Again another subject that varies from doctor to doctor. I was given a
straw to use in the hospital and told to use it so that it would help me.
Go figure.

Not all doctors say no straws. I was given one in the hospital and had no
problems. I use them every day cause it helps me get my 64 oz. in. Talk
to your doc about it because what works or doesnt work for one person may
not work for you. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 110+ and counting
