Question:
Anyone else dump on fruits
I am in my fifth week post-op and having one heck of a time all week with vomiting and dumping on fruit. I love fruit and I hope this isn't going to be an on going problem of dumping on most fruits. It seems mostly to happen with watermelon and rasberries. I'm also dumping on dairy and artificial sweetened items especially splenda I haven't ever really been able to tolerate nutra-sweet. It's to the point now that I'm dumping on water. Help! And yes I spoke with my surgeon, but I find it much more comforting to talk with the people on this site. I am having a better day so far I didn't throw up the sips of water I had today as yet, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. My Doctor told me if I throw up again on water to check into the hospital. What a miserable week this has turned out to be. I'm almost beging to wish I had just died fat, happy and full. LOL. Hopefully someday, I will join the ranks of the optomistic bunch that are happy they had this surgery, but I'm not there yet. — Rosa F. (posted on August 14, 2003)

I have heard of people dumping on fruit, but there is nothing in water that
would cause you to dump since dumping is caused by things high in sugar,
fat or carbs. Are you eating too much or too fast? Follow your surgeon's
advice to check into the hospital if you throw up again since it might be a
stricture or something else not dumping related. You don't want to get
dehydrated or malnourished.

I agree with Yolanda - maybe you are eating too much or too fast. I can
eat most things just fine but if I eat just a little too much or a little
too fast I will end up feeling really awful for awhile. If I slow down,
chew well and stop when full, I can eat almost anything. Are you drinking
water while eating? Drinking right after eating on a full stomach? Are
you truly dumping (fast heartbeat, nausea, sweating, dizziness, shakiness)
or are you just vomiting with no other symptoms? If none of these seem to
be your problem, I would ask your doctor to check for a stricture.
Meantime, take extra care to eat/drink slowly, be careful not to overeat,
and see if that helps. If not, please get yourself checked out soon!

How are you defining dumping? If you mean throwing up, that isn't dumping
(in case your confused...a lot of people are about this issue of dumping.
Not trying to talk down to you). If your throwing up water I'd also
suggest getting to the hospital and at least having them CHECK for a
stricture. Good luck and will keep good thoughts for your progress. I
know this period is more than a bit depressing, but it will pass.

Ok, maybe the little mention of dumping on water was mistated, but I have
been dumping on the other mentioned items with all the symtoms that are
consistant with dumping. I'm eating slower, not mixing water with food of
any kind. I wasn't vomiting on water until after I started dumping this
week. So far the water is staying down, but anytime I try to eat anything
food wise, my system starts to rebel. So no food for me for a couple of
days. I might try some very watered down soup tomorrow.

I'm been having the same problem. Anytime I eat any solid food for the
past 2 days I am throwing it up. The only thing that I have been able to
keep down was about 1 TBSP of pureed chicken and water. The only way that
water is staying down is if I take little sips. My surgeon wants to see me
tomorrow. I'd get it checked out.

I am 7 weeks out now. At 6 weeks out, I had the exact same symptoms.
Couldn't even keep water down. I had a stricture going out of the bottom of
my poch. I got scoped and a balloon last week, and have been feeling
wonderful ever since the scope. It was awful before that!!! Take care and
check with dr. for a stricture. Good Luck. Kathy
