Question:
how many bites are too many bites 10 wks post-op?

i am 10 weeks post op (down almost 70 pounds)!!! i feel like i can eat a lot now. not as much pre-op (of course) but i used to get full on 2 bites, 3 maybe and felt like i was gonna "hurl"... now i am eating about 10 bites of food... is this normal? i don't measure my food, never did... so i am not sure how much exactly. when i am at work, i know i can eat at least 4-5 pieces of chicken pieces from the chinese restaurant. where before, i would fill on 2. then i eat 2-3 bites of veggies? maybe 1 bite of rice, try not to eat too much due to the carbs, is this normal this early???? just curious. thanks~    — heather S. Hon, the swelling is going down and you should be able to hold more. I'm not so concerned about the amount you are eating but be very, very careful of rice. It can and will put you in the hospital with a blockage if you aren't very careful. I know - happened to me at 7 months. Rice tends to swell after you eat it and it can cause some real problems. My surgeon discourages it altogether - exceptin something like gumbo where it is already very puffy from absorbing the liquid. I will never eat rice as a side of with chinese food again, I promise you.

Heather, that sounds about right for volume of food. I remember that at about 10 weeks out, I was suddenly able to eat quite a bit more food, too. It's part of the healing process. It should now be much easier for you to get in all your protein and water because you can hold more. I've always had a problem with portion control, so I do measure my food. I eat 1/2 cup (a little more if it's light food) or 2 to 3 ounces (in weight) of meat or cheese plus 2 T of veggies at a meal. It sounds like you're doing about the same.
