Question:
Seeking NON-DUMPING post-ops - did you START dumping after awhile
I found out by dumb mistake that it takes me quite a lot of sugar to dump, and then I only have a mild reaction. I'm trying to find out if anyone started out post-op NOT dumping, but further out post-op began to dump? Thanks all. OPEN RNY 7/7/03 227/212.6/135 — sweetmana (posted on July 22, 2003)

I have not had a major problem with dumping until this weekend. While I
really don't experiment with it, sometimes there is nothing you can do
about not having water or diet bevaerages available when your traveling in
a foreign place, so, I have had an occasional beverage with sugar over the
last 4 mos when H20 was not available either. I was at an event this past
weekend and they had no water so I had to buy a pre-sweetended Tea and
after drinking it I dumped. It was the first time I had a full fledge
dumping episode and I am 4 mos out. I was thinking that my body may be
changing it's mind :-)

I didn't really test the dumping waters until I was about 3 months post op
since it was Christmas time. I only had little bites here and there and
found that I didn't dump. I am now 9 months post and unless I have a huge
piece of cake on an empty stomach, I still don't dump and at worst, I'll
feel a little funny. I discovered around 5 months post that I do however
dump on pasta. I don't miss the pasta but it takes every ounce of willpower
I have not to eat sweets.

Hi! I am almost 7 months out and only in the last couple of weeks have
found that sugary liquids are making me dump. Previously, I had no dumping
episodes. I had an icee yesterday and was in the bathroom all afternoon. I
guess it's a good thing--no icees for me!! Alli~~~ Open RNY 1/2/03 -112

Hi
I'm seven months out and have never dumped. Nothing will make me dump. I
wish it would. Some people just won't, others will very easily. For those of
us who do not dump,we have to be aware of what we are eating because we can
over do on the things that are not good for us.

I am 10 months out and never have had much of a reaction to sugar. Like
you it takes me alot to dump. If I decide to eat sugar, I just allow
myself a small portion and it satisfies my sweet tooth. Open RNY,proximal

I never dump, because I don't eat sugar and avoid all but real whole
grains. Dumping has to do with how much small intestine is
removes/bypassed. The shorter the intestine, the more likely you will dump
when you 'dump' sugar/starch/glucose into an area further down the
digestive tract than nature intended. That's why you dump-or react to the
influx of glucose into the system. The body reacts by increasing the heart
rate, drawing large amounts of fluids into the intestine and making you
shake liek crazy. It's a physiologic response to an increase in glucose
and the the subsequent insulin that rushes in to even out your blood sugar
levels. It's simple-avoid all concentrated sweets and refined carbs.

I only really dumped once since my surgery. I can eat anything and the most
I feel is a bit icky. But at a flea market I ate most of one small brownie.
WOW YUK I never want to do that again. I wish I dumped like that all the
time I would never touch sugar again. I slept for 2 hours then felt great
and worked hard the rest of the day. That was a couple months ago it hasnt
happened since<P> My surgeon Dr Philp Schauer says dumping isnt
affected by the length of the bypass.

I never dumped until 7 months out on ice cream. Then, stupid me, I thought
sugar free yogurt wouldn't be the same, and guess what? No more ice cream
for me :(
