Question:
Anyone have kidney damage prior to WLS??
I really need to hear from you guys. Did any of you guys have kidney damage and still have WLS?? If so how much protein do you take in? And do you do OK with it? Were you on something for your kidneys pre-op & did you continue it post op? Did the surgery help with your problem or did the hi pro diet make it worse?? (or maybe it stayed the same?) Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom & experience. Its much needed. — Shelly S. (posted on July 14, 2003)

Shelly, I have FSGS. A disease of both kidneys that is attributed to my
obesity. It was my kidney doctor who really talkied to me about having the
surgery. I am allowed 80grams of protein a day and this is enough, I don't
think I could eat anymore. I eat only protein. My creatin clearence before
surgery was down to 28 (dialysis is required at 10 to 12) and now, just 6
months after surgery it is up to 50 and the normal range is 66 to 122! I
couldn't have asked for anything better than this!!! I thank God for this
miracle everyday!!! Best of luck to you on your journey! God Bless.

Thanks Toni, that's heartening! I was diagnosed with diabetic kidney
disease when by accident they found out I was leaking a LOT of protein. So
I've been trying to find out others' stories and how they're doing post-op.
I'm hoping more people can come forward and talk with me too. I really
need encouragement & to hear how things have honestly gone for people -
good or bad.

Shelley...I lost my entire right kidney to a tumor a year before this
surgery...my doc recommended that I do no more than 20grams of protein at a
time so that the remaining kidney would not be overloaded. Hope this
helps....you can email me direct at [email protected]
