Question:
Any type 1 diabetics on insulin pump who have had WLS surgery?

I am a type 1 diabetic who's endocrinologist hasn't had any type 1's have the surgery. I know this question was posted previously but it's been quite a few months. Has anyone had the surgery and what blood sugar complications have you had, if any?    — Dorothy G. (posted on July 1, 2003)

I am not on a pump, but I do have Type 1 diabetes. There aren't a whole lot of us Type 1's on the site. I know that I have a couple of emails from other folks with Type 1 diabetes who have had or were planning to have WLS. I'll see if I can't find them. If I do, I'll let you know.<p> I had my surgery in May 2002 and am down 120 pounds. I'm still hoping to lose another 60 pounds or so. My insulin needs have decreased quite a bit. I'm also off my cholesterol meds, am only taking one BP med (and it's an ACE Inhibitor that my endo wants me to keep taking because it's good for the kidneys.) and am, in general, doing well.

Iam also type 1 diabetic and having a hard time finding other WLS patients in my area or even searching here. I'm scheduled to see my endo next week to see if she will support me on WLS since I've been more than interested and doing alot of research for the last six months. She is the only dr I see on a regular basis for the diabetes & graves disease (thyroid removed) which I'm on synthroid, and I just have this feeling that she'll just not be supportative. Any ideas on how to deal with that issue? I'm now over 100 lbs overweight and feel like since being diagnosised in adulthood (27) in 1994 that I've continued to pack on the pounds, even with every diet under the sun. I have a consult with a surgeon next month and hope to get all my pre-tests done. Gar, I would definitely appreciated any other members profiles that have type 1. Thanks and good luck Dorothy!

I have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years and had an insulin pump for 11 years. I wore my pump during my RNY surgery on my thigh. I have maintained 100 lb. weight loss but my A1C is a little higher now that I am short bowel. My glucose rockets up 200 points within minutes of eating as evidenced by the continuous glucose sensor. You can do it!
